Private & Independent Schools
| I saw on the Lowell School website that the application deadline was extended by one week to Jan 16. Is this common? Does this raise a red flag? Just asking because most of the schools in this area seem to inundated with apps that an extension seems awfully burdensome. |
| Could be because of lack of applicants. Could be because of an influx of interest from those moving to the area (Obama appointments, etc.) |
| It's the economy. From what I've heard, the top few schools are doing fine, application-wise, but I think the next level is feeling the pinch. |
| I feel like I am always "defending" Lowell on these boards...BUT, my DC attends and I just went to the PTA meeting last week in which they said that application levels had not dropped. I don't think they'd be fibbing as the rest of the meeting was a very frank look at school finances and what the future holds for the school. So, I don't know why they extended the deadline but I don't think it is a red flag. |
Yes, I've noticed that if anything is posted about Lowell someone (perhaps you) are immediately out there defending. Seriously, why is that? Why do you feel the need to do that? On a forum like this, there will always be misinformation even from well-meaning individuals who think they are providing correct information, perceptions far from reality, opinions that differ, and those who just don't think highly of Lowell for whatever reasons. |
| If applications are not down at most non-Big 3 schools, I'd be surprised. For most of us, private school is discretionary spending. And most people are cutting back on that. |
| The is the Lowell poster. I do not post about Lowell a lot (so I am not the one who is "immediately" there) but I do think it's a great place and I do think that this board is oddly very negative towrads it as a whole. |

excuse the typos..
|
| It says they extended the deadline because of technical problems with the online application, and I can believe that, because I had problems with OUR online application there! |
| Most of the elite schools had a deadline of this Friday, the 15. So good for Lowell that they said hey due to whatever reason, get them in by Saturday and get some cold clothes with the extra day for the innauguration. I think they are all feeling the pinch in one way or the other. Lets face it everyone somewhat afraid and all of our savings are down. |
You need to go look at a calendar, hon! |
What is your probelm, 2nd Poster? It seems that when anyone defends a school on these boards, especially one not usually called a "top 3" by all the sycophants, someone (perhaps you?) always jumps all over her? and makes nasty and baseless insinuations about why her child is at X school, and sometimes even goes so far as to try and out the person (see multiple other threads). It is so unnecessary and pathetic and completely transparent. Go hide under a rock where you belong. No, BTW, my child does not go to Lowell, I have no idea who you are or who PP is, or who any anonymous poster is, and I do not care.

| this poster likes to change the font on the comment to which she is reponding to bold. Her posts are all over. Arrived recently and very active. |
This is my first post on this thread, but I have been following various threads on this Board for some time. I will say that, as a general rule, when someone writes a post that says "We love this school, it's wonderful, everyone there is great, my kid is very happy," it's usually followed by a torrent of abuse from people who say "Your school is terrible, you need to be more objective, please try to provide specific facts rather than just statements of opinion, you obviously work for the school or are otherwise some sort of flack," etc. But when somebody posts a statement to the effect of "I hate this school, it's terrible, everyone there is awful, the kids who go there hate it," most subsequent posts just continue to pile on the abuse, rather than ask for more balanced views. And when a lone voice does speak up to defend the school, the cycle of "be more objective, provide specific facts, don't just be a mouthpiece for the school" starts up. It's hard to escape the conclusion that while there may in fact be people who are on this website to learn more about independent schools, there is a vocal faction that is here solely to spew their bile. Of course, their posts are the ones I log on to read, so keep 'em coming! |
| I'm poster 16:38. I did not insinuate anything about the poster or say anything negative about her school. I really wanted to know why she felt the need to defend the school because she said she feels like she is always defending Lowell on these boards. I really wanted to know why anyone felt the need to defend their school for the reasons I stated earlier -- people are going to have different opinions and perceptions. Lots of schools get bashed (including my kids' school), but only parents of certain schools tend to defend on DCUM. Forgive my sincere question. |
