I understand about the separated wife, but your own kids? Even if he felt they were financially ok, he can't leave anything sentimental??

I read about that when he died. Sad. At least his step son helped him out at the end. I read that he was a good person but in interviews he seemed like a difficult person.

He disinherited all 8 of his children. If you hate all of your children that much, you are an asshole. If it's one or two, maybe it's them. If it's ALL of them... the problem is definitely you.

If he only had a few thousand dollars to leave, it makes sense to me that he would leave it to the family member who had provided physical care for him in his last years.

If he'd had an estate of millions that would be different.

What did he do with all his money, that he was left being worth only $18k?

I think early film stars were often under contract to powerful movie studios that kept most of the money and rights. So the stars didn't make much money from their work.

He made a LOT of money on Broadway and on tour, but he died owing back taxes and medical bills.

Pissed it away. Solicited funds towards the end. They never learn.

This is why people with lots of money are "cheap" - they hold onto their money instead of trying to fund the gimmes and hangers-on.

He must have been a rotten parent, but at least he didn't differentiate between his children. THAT is a surefire way to cause friction and hate for the rest of their lives.

Wasn't he a womanizer?

That's exactly what happened. There wasn't much left and it all went to the relative who'd provided daily care the last few years of life.

This is OP. Sorry, what I meant was, even if you didn't have much money left, why not just leave SOMEthing for your children in your will? Like an heirloom, jewelry or a watch or silverware, anything?? If it's not ill will, why "disinherit" them?

That relative probably had something to do with how the will was written.
