| My parents are considering moving to the area from New England. They would like a place on or very near the water within at least 1.5 hr of dc area. They are interested in areas not too crowded but with plenty of good restaurants and other amenities available. Any areas around have the feel of a small New England town? Budget is flexible. They are retired so schools and commute don't matter. |

When you say near the water, do you mean any body of water, or the Atlantic?
Annapolis, MD (1hr distance) St. Michaels, MD (1.5-2hr) Alexandria, VA (30min) National Harbor, MD (15min) North Beach, MD - though not a ton of dining options here Norfolk, VA (1.5-2 hrs from DC) Area all coastal towns with ports and connect to Atlantic. I've never been to New England so cannot compare on the feel but all have nice residential communities w/ local and commercial retailers. |
| Either. They have a boat so would like to be able to bring it here. |

What does this mean? |
| As a transplanted New Englander, I would say Annapolis. |
| Budget up to around 1 million but definitely happy to spend less. |

I think around Annapolis or Edgewater is your best bet.

Sorry, but unless you're flying or going 100+ mph, Norfolk is at least a 4 hour drive from DC. |
A million? Is this for just the property? I'm not sure what sort of place they're going to buy waterfront for just a million |
| Lake Anna |
Edgewater outside Annapolis fits the bill. You can get a small home with water access on one of the Chesapeake tributaries for under $1mm. |
| Do you want to be on a muddy river, or do you want open ocean? Other criteria? |
I laughed my ass off at this too. But then I looked at the rest of the list, saw it included National Harbor, and realized PP must have been joking about it all. Except Annapolis, which would be the viable option here. |
