rigatoni + shoe strings = rigatoni necklaces
looking out the window to find squirrels or birds

DS's favorites involve me cleaning up afterwards, but it can sometimes be worth it if you're at the end of your rope:
"helping" to make cookies or muffins
helping to sort the silverware into their proper slots in the drawers
water play at the sink (and then maybe a bath afterwards)
three scoops of flour, two buckets, and some measuring cups with close supervision

We do a lot of painting, I know it's messy but they love it. Cover your table with newspaper and let them have at it, the tempera paint is washable so I don't worry too much.

Michael's sells these pom poms, and various shaped felt cutouts that my 2 yo loves to glue. Also glitter glue and buttons are popular. He is 2 1/2 and can now cut paper into little pieces with child scissors. Color wonder finger paints are also fun for him.

Make sugar cookies together-- rolling out dough and cutting with cookie cutters, then decorating with colored icing and various kinds of sprinkles.

Wow - I never even thought to let my 2 year old play with scissors or glue (I assume everyoneo means child safe). Is there glue that isn't really sticky? (as in I will be able to wash it off my son, his clothes, and anything he gets it on?)

What entertained my son for an entire day was turning toilet paper and papertowel rolls (the cardboard center) into octopuses. Cut the bottom (really 1/2 to 3/4 of the length) into 8 legs (leave a few inches for a "head'). I did the cutting, he helped "decorate them" Then we turned an empty box into a pool with blue crayon. All day long, the octopusses got wet, got dry, got wet....then they went on all sorts of adventures through the house.
