| My 5 yr old son was just evaluated by the schools and given an iep under developmental delay. Has anyone else had a child with an iep with this marker of eligibility? I just wondered, if they still had an iep at 6, what were they eligible under when they Re-did the iep? |
| My child entered the system right before his fifth birthday with a DD label. They switched him to OHI for anxiety and a ADHD a year later. It was no problem, it just gives the team a little time to figure out what the disability really is since the children are so young. |

DS got an IEP under DD when he was 4 yrs old. I'm not sure why b/c at the time he got the IEP, he had an ASD/Asperger's diagnosis from our developmental pediatrician who attended all the IEP meetings in preK.
When DS was 6, the school changed the classification to ASD. Basically checking off the box. Nothing changed. |
| I'm a teacher, not a parent, but I've had kids transition from DD to SLI (speech language), LD, ASD, ID, and OHI for various conditions. I've also seen kids come off of IEPs at reevalutation. |
| I'm pretty sure he can keep this designation for the next 3 years. The DD designation expires by the time the kid turns 8, so if there aren't issues he can be dismissed from services. If there are still issues, there might be a different code assigned. |
| 18:14 here. I was told that in DC, you can only keep an IEP under DD until 5 yrs old. Thus checking the ASD box at 6 for us. It depends on the jurisdiction. |
| In maryland i think you can keep it to age 9 |
| In DC you can't do developmental delay for social/emotional so we ended up with ED, which I was concerned about but it was the only thing he qualified for. Having the IEP in place has helped a lot. |

I have 2 boys on IEPs-don' get caught up in the stigma of the label- it is the best thing that could happen.
It gives parents the means to insist that the school gives their children the tools they need to be successful. Read your special needs booklet. In our state they re-evaluate the kids every couple of years. But you have the right to request reevaluation at any point. If you can give reasons, like what they have put in place is not helping your child to progress, you can even push for an independent evaluation. Look on line for Child Education Advocacy groups & meet ups- They have a lot of great advice to help parents navigate the system. Keep in mind public schools are not required to give your child the "best education", they are only required to give your child the "appropriate" education. With a little diligence ,and research an IEP can really help you get both for your child. |

My child got an IEP for developmental delay at age 3. He is almost 7 now. Last year (almost 6), we had a review and changed his IEP from developmental delay to "medical other". I thought they said he could only have "developmental delay" until age 7. This was Montgomery County.
I would call the county and find out if you need to know. |
