Hello parents – I know there has been a lot of discussion of building quality programs into the DCPS school system we want for our families and our city. If you live in Ward 4, next Wednesday at 6:00-8:00 p.m. will be a major opportunity to talk about what you want for the schools in your Ward.

The Ward 4 Education Alliance (formerly ForWard4) wants to invite you to a meeting on DCPS Middle and High Schools in Ward 4 at Powell Elementary School with special guests from DCPS:

• Emily Durso, DCPS Chief of Planning and Post-Secondary Readiness
• Dan Gordon, DCPS Senior Advisor, School Design

We will present on draft concepts for middle school at the MacFarland middle school site;
Explain the need for middle school in northern Ward 4;
Receive a presentation by our DCPS guests on possibilities for a modernized Roosevelt Senior High School
and - most importantly - offer community input.

Child care and food will be available and we will have plenty of room in the Powell auditorium, just inside the front doors of the school. The Ward 4 Education Alliance would like to get to know you and have DC and DCPS know your views.

Powell Elementary School is located at 1350 Upshur St. N.W., between 13th and 14th Street on Upshur Street, N.W., just across from Upshur Park.

The Ward 4 Education Alliance brings together Ward 4 parents, students, educators, and community members to share information and advocate for continued improvement in the quality of education in Ward 4 DCPS schools. (Formerly ForWard4)

Hello - I also wanted to let everyone know that we also expect Principal Ivor Mitchell to join as DCPS presents and we discuss what our hopes are for Roosevelt. So it should really be a great opportunity whether you're interested in middle school, high school or both.

Looking forward to discussion about the international focus of the revitalized Roosevelt.

Here's the Washington Post article on today's announcement: http://www.washingtonpost.com/local/education/dcs-roosevelt-high-to-become-international-themed-school/2014/05/14/cff607fa-db99-11e3-b745-87d39690c5c0_story.html

This, from the article, really appeals to me as a Powell parent.

Elementary schools that offer dual-language instruction are routinely among the city’s most sought-after academic options. Several dual-language charter schools have banded together to create a new secondary school, D.C. International, that will open in the fall, but the traditional school system has not until now offered a way for students to continue their language studies through 12th grade.

Henderson said detailed plans for the school will be worked out in conjunction with the community, but programming will range from career training to college prep and could include dual-language instruction, international travel, vocational education in areas such as international business and finance, and international culinary arts.

DCPS has been adding all these dual language programs, so it only makes sense that they beef up the offering through grade 12.
