Terrible back pain - can any suggest a prenatal massage therapist or acupuncturist?

Please help, only 24 weeks and having bad back pain despite prenatal yoga, daily stretching and low impact exercising.

I don't know where/what kind of back pain you're having,... and certainly some back pain is normal, so I'm not trying to freak you out. But if it is in the area of your kidneys, be warned: kidney stones can affect pregnant women because of the high doses of vitamins/calcium you're taking in your prenatal. You might want to get checked, because if you're creating stones, you want to know now... before they grow into giant boulders that you cannot pass.

Like the PP, not to scare you, but have you called your doctor? My sister was having bad back pain at 24 weeks and thought it was just par for the course for being pregnant. Turned out she was in preterm labor. If you haven't called your doc, I'd suggest that just to rule it out!

Thanks for the notes. I actually went to the Doctor yesterday and they checked everything. My back pain is the lower back, probably the sciatic nerve. They recommended I find a prenatal massage therapist or acupuncturist.

I had this too - sciatica. I don't know where you are located - but I saw Tracy and Darcia at Sugar House Day Spa in Old Town Alexandria. With both of them, it's not about getting a great comfortable massage (where you feel good for an hour) but getting all of that tension out of the muscle. After the massage is when you'll start feeling much better. They literally massaged my lower back/butt and I could feel all of that tension being released.

I also did the massage in conjunction with a chiropractor.

Ice, not heat, on your lower lower back is also helpful. Hope this helps.

Thanks.. I will try anything at this point. I live in DC but will drive to old town.

I recommend Nicole Nadeau for massage therapy. She will come to your house and do it. Tel. 202-251-9116.

I had terrible back pain with my first pregnancy and got several prenatal massages at Natural Body Spa in Potomac. They were excellent!

I had/have sciatica too. Go see Andre at Elizabeth Arden Red Door spa on Conn. Ave. he worked wonders and if you're not too uptight about it...he even worked out that horrible pain associated with sciatic issues that shoots through your butt! The other thing that helped me was a massaging cushion my husband bought for me, it heats and massages, it's like a seat cushion that can be moved to any chair...works out the minor kinks quite well.

When I had sciatica during pregnancy, I went to Jette Hansen at Old Town Massage Center; 312 South Washington Street, Suite 3C Alexandria, VA, 22314 Phone: 703 518 8484 (http://www.oldtownmassagecenter.com/home.html). She is fabulous! The massage helped a bit, but it was temporary relief. What was the most helpful for me was the pregnancy yoga classes--these classes would really help relieve the pain for a few days. I went to Sun & Moon Yoga in Arlington, which was great. (I think what happens during yoga is that your muscles get stretched out, and it helps relieve the pressure against the sciatic nerve, which is getting squeezed.) Good luck!

I had a prenatal massage a couple months ago in the city at the spa at the JW Marriott. I don't remember the name of the therapist, but she spent most of the time focusing on just a few areas that were particularly tense. One nice thing about this spa is that they let you use their gym (including indoor pool and whirlpool) before and after your appointment. Although, might be tough getting an appointment there for the next week since they are so close to the mall.

Also, I LOVE my acupuncturist: Monika Rukus in Chevy Chase, on Connecticut just south of the Beltway. She also has massage therapists who work from her office who are trained in prenatal massage.

At about 29 weeks I started to get back pain that felt like someone was jabbing an ice pick into my lower back every time I put pressure on my right leg. I was not a big believer in chiropractic but at a loss for any other ideas I tried it and in 3 visits the pain was totally gone (I kept going through the pregnancy to ward off reoccurrence). I'm a convert. You want to find one that is trained to work with pregnant women so they know how to adjust around your belly. I went to Anthony Noya in Frienship Heights, who I found from a rec on DCUM. www.noyachiropractic.com. Good luck!
