What's up with my frozen milk?

Anonymous
So my son is 4 months old and I have always had a freezer stash of milk that I haven't used much of until now (went back to work part time) I noticed yesterday that the thawed milk tasted bad to me. It smells good, sweet like just pumped milk, and tases good right at first but then gets an "off" aftertaste, I mean it made me gag. Now I just noticed it and he has always drank the thawed milk without an issue, and today he had 2 bottles of it without an issue and I tasted the bag left in the fridge when I got home and it was the same thing. I just tased my pumped milk from today and it has no aftertaset. The frozen milk is from the end of october so it is not that old. I am thawing a bag from 12/29 right now to see if it tastes to same way. Is the milk bad? Would my DS still drink it if it was bad? It is not making him sick, should I still give it to him or throw it out? If I have to throw out all the milk in the freezer I think I might jump off a bridge. I spent endless hours pumping that milk so I could be free from stressing out about him having enough and me pumping enough the day before and now I am freaking out.

I read about the lipase; but would the baby still drink the milk if it had truly gone "bad"?

Could it be that the milk picked up some odors in the freezer if the bag wasn't sealed tightly? Is this the first time you tasted thawed milk? Maybe the after taste is "normal" since your baby doesn't seem to mind drinking the thawed milk (you said he's drank some without issues before, right?).
...just a few thoughts. It's really tough to say.

One more thing - has your baby had any of the October pumpings yet?

18:39 poster here -- I don't know if your baby would drink bm it if it was bad. I didn't have that problem with my stored milk, but I'd heard of it. I'd ask your ped or lactation consultant or La Leche League perhaps?

Op here, I posted this on la leche league and kellymom as well and got a couple people who said it is fine to feed the baby the milk which has extra lipase in it, some babies just will not drink it so those moms have to throw it out. As long as he drinks it it is fine, it might taste bad but it is not really "bad" as in how sour milk would be bad to drink. I just scalded the last two pumping sessions and froze them so I will see if it helps. Thanks for your help
