Will/did your kindergartener take the school bus?

DD will start kindergarten in FCPS in the fall and I'm unsure whether to drive her or have her take the bus. Did/will your kindergartener take the bus?

Take the bus.

Why would you clog the roads and school parking lot?

I will never understand why people who get buses drive their kids when there are no extenuating circumstances.

Bus. I waited with him in the morning, and he went to extended day in the afternoon.

Why shouldn't your kid take the bus?

First day.

My kids were thrilled to ride the bus in K--but then they only rode it one day because they were "walkers".

oops-- I meant to say one "way"

No, don't do this. I work at an elementary school, and consistency from day 1 is key. I've seen kids whose parents drive them on the first day and pick them up. Then on the second day, they're a mess. They are crying at dismissal because there is no parent to pick them up. In the morning, they're wondering why they're not driving and wondering who will help them.

Start the daily routine on the first day. You can drive behind the bus if you like, but make your kid do the routine from day one.

No. We specifically picked a house to buy that was less than a mile from the elementary school because we wanted our kids to be able to walk.

These are the same SAHMs who eat lunch with their kids in high school.

Ditto, but now we'll have to drive instead of walk to beat older dc's bus home. Such a drag.

DC is very excited about taking the bus. She'll be in after-school care so she can't take the bus home but will do so in the morning. Also, taking the bus to school will be a nice break from 5 years of daycare drop off. Having said that, I'm pretty nervous about DC on the bus. She's an impulsive child and I'm worried that she'll wonder off or run in front of the car when she gets off the bus in the morning at school. I will put her on the bus in the morning but it's getting from the bus at school to her class that worries me.

No, DC walks unless he gets dropped off by DH on his way to work (it's on the way)

My DS was very excited to take the bus. It also made me feel better that FCPS rules have kindergarteners always sit in the front seats of the bus near the driver. Apparently not all counties have this rule.
