She was nearly 86 and died after a long life, she was married to her last husband for 54 years, she had a distinguished second career in politics. In what way is this a tragedy?

I don't think you have to know someone in order to feel an impact from their death. It is always sad when people we admire die. Shirley Temple definitely had a big cultural impact although I never really cared for her movies or her politics. She definitely had a lot of talents and abilities and achieved a lot in life.

OP, you should listen to her interview on the Diane Rhem show. Very interesting.
