2024 Boys Private School Results /Game Schedules/ Commentary

Next year might be the last hurrah for Bullis near the top. After 25, they will be very thin. Cupboard at Prep, Gonzaga, Landon, and Gonzaga much fuller.

These DM boys are getting hot at the right time. I wouldn't be shocked if we see a great one at Military road on friday. What do we think the outcome will be?

Fine, I'll bite. SJC 18-8 DM. End of the ride.

New players suiting up for St. Johns on Friday. End of the road for DM.

Been hearing that for weeks. Will believe it when I see it. SJC wins either way.

While Bullis will remain strong and can play the dark horse in the IAC, these Bullis teams are a fraction compared to what they had during the Boarman Headmaster era. The previous headmaster as it has been well documented, was sports-obsessed and put a huge emphasis on Bullis' boy's lax and football teams. Lax team had more resources, a larger FA budget and could get applicants through admissions quickly. Bullis a few years ago was bringing in 5+ plus junior/senior transfers every offseason providing them with plenty of depth.

Having watched Bullis play this spring a few times, their starters can run with anyone in the area however unlike previous teams from 3 - 5 years ago, the Bulldogs have little to no depth. Bullis still recruits but not nearly as aggressively as they once did during the Boarman era.

The Spring of 2025 will be interesting for the Bulldogs as they have likely the best 25 class in the DMV... Rumors have been circulating Coach Bellistri might also retire after next season.

Time will tell...

to summarize, when he has talent, he's a good coach. Sort of like most coaches. Got it. I've watch Jeff for the last 10 years in the IAC, and while he has been a good coach for years and a program builder, I would say the last thing he is known for is developing players. This season only proves my point. Nobody evolved this season at all, including some of these highly regarded 25's (who are quite the selfish type of player\, based on what I witnessed). I saw this team play early in the season and as recently as last week, and if anything, many players regressed and had far too much on their plate.

If he is going to go out after next season, I hope he gets his coaching staff fixed, including someone with an offensive mind with a new way of thinking, someone who can run the box (and not let the kids decide who plays) and let Jeff do what he does best, manage the game/program from above.

The conference is better with Bullis battling Landon and Prep, I hope Jeff realizes that.

Dave Mitchell to Bullis in a year or two would create havoc in the IAC

This is a joke right? STA and EHS were awful, and they barely beat those two teams and got beat by the top of the IAC by double digits. They have some solid players but coaching is awful, and has been even back to the championship year. The coaching staff needs to be cleaned out and start over. But i thnk the 'bottom feeder' title is already well established over there in Alexandria.

I don’t think so. I think the point was they already are bottom feeders if they can barely beat the other perennial bottom feeders.

Lmao, the HC at Bullis cares nothing, NOTHING, about kids…. Neither do several
Of the top local Private school programs. The same goes for college level D1…. The parents that live through their kids on this forum are delusional to think that they do. Winning, name sake, legacy, and to be in the conversation is what they truly care about….. period.

Are there any good assistants that STA could take a chance on? As bad as they were, they had some talent but the worst system.

This is probably a little unfair. When there was the coup attempt years back, lots of Bullis alums who appreciate Bellistri stepped up to help save his job. Additionally, he has made a smaller school relevant in the IAC for 15 years against Prep and Landon, both much larger boys schools. Does he likely have some ego as a HC? Sure. Is all he cares about his high school lacrosse legacy? No.

Bullis couldn't compete with Prep and Landon by just building through their school, they've had to go get kids, and Bellistri has consistently done that. They've also won IAC championships when they weren't the overwhelming favorites and had at least one top 5 national finish. Neither of those happens on talent alone.

As for this year's team, they lost to Prep twice by 2, Gonzaga by 2, Landon by 5, and St. Paul's by 1 in OT. Would they like to have won some of those? Of course, but it isn't a catastrophic fall off.

For those thinking that Dave Mitchell could be a savior, remember that DeMatha hasn't been great under his stewardship with a lot of criticism looking at Xs and Os. If Mitchell does end up being the next Bullis HC, he can probably funnel talent via Next Level, but would want to enlist some great assistants.
