A couple of summers ago I tried a container garden on my partially shaded balcony and had great success with lettuce and not much else. I'm trying again this year with DD (2) - we are focusing on lettuces and herbs. Any other urban gardeners out there? What are you growing and where? Any good tips?

love basil in a pot but its still too early for basil. Also oregano, dill, cilantro, and jalapeno peppers. I've done cherry tomatoes but they take a lot of room.
|
Put a few plants out for the hummingbirds and a feeder.
Radishes grow quickly so kids generally enjoy them. If you don't have much sun tomatoes won't really work for you unfortunately.
Yes, a partially shaded spot is going to be challenging for vegetables. Many herbs will grow in part shade and leafy things. I wonder if mint would be fun for kiddos?
I've been using Bosmere grow bags for tomatoes and lettuce. Peas go in an earth box, climbing behind alpine strawberries. I replace the peas with beans when the weather gets hot, then peas again in fall. I mix raspberries on trellises in the garden, but have a blueberry and the new Brazelberry bush raspberry in big pots. Herbs are all potted. Shade is challenging, but alpine strawberries do well in partial shade. So do wintergreen plants.
You probably have too much shade for much if lettuce was the only thing that did well for you. Mint and peas might be ok, also radishes and kale. Good luck!
