In anticipation of an outdoor gathering tomorrow night, I wonder if I should go ahead and replace the dead winter plants with some summer annuals.
I'd prefer to give it another couple of weeks... But also don't want to wasted money on Pansies; which wouldn't mind the cold, but will die out when the hear hits. What do you think? |
| I'm going to plant some this weekend - geraniums, etc. Definitely too early for the veg garden and things like basil though - I find when we get too eager on those things they don't do well. So maybe look for some hardier plants but don't go overboard. |
Uh oh, I just did my garden! Oh well, I guess we'll see. |
| We planted our annuals last week. They seem to be doing well. |
| Where do you live? I think you'd be fine if you live in DC. If you live higher up away from DC, it might be more prudent to wait. |
+1 |
| They say that May 5 is the last frost day in this area. I have gardened for 35 years here and been burned only once after May 5 (or should I say frozen)! Look at the 10 day forecast. You should be fine. |
| Mine are in the ground and in pots and have been for 2 weeks. You'll be fine. |
| Yes it's a good time to plant. I have had basil and tomato seedlings sitting outside and they are Ok. |
I planted three weeks ago- snapdragons, pansies. Doing fine. Im in Kensington. |
| It's a good time. I actually looked at photos from last year, and I planted almost a month earlier. |
| Where I live (Silver Spring) it's forecast to get down in the 40s the next couple nights. I just bought a bunch of stuff but am going to hold out a few more days. Mothers Day is the rule of thumb around here. |
| I'm glad I didn't plant anything before then - I did mulch and now much of that has floated down from the beds onto the grass this past week. I have to clean up that mess before planting anything. |
At American Plant they have signs next to some plants (eg, basil) saying not to plant until the temp stays above 50-55. |
