Paying for Berkeley over UMD for Comp Sci - Worth it?

UMD with instate tuition, Cal with out of state tuition.

If you think your kid is excellent and going to study hard, and you can afford it, then I think it's worth while. If you just have an average bright kid who may goof off, then no.

I would go to UMD. They have a very strong program and lots of work opportunities here.

If you can afford it, absolutely pay for Berkeley. Right there near Silicon Valley, plus if your kid decides not to do cs, Berkeley is a better name to have on a resume.

...and if you know folks in Google - you can swing an internship - no problem.

Berkeley is just a magical place. If you can afford it, do it. That said, UMD has a very strong dept and you can definitely get jobs/internships in Silicon Valley from UMD.

And don't forget Sergei Brin went to UMD!

It depends on where you think your child will end up. In other parts of the country, people don't know much about UMD. I'd go with Berkeley since it's universally known.

I'm from silicon valley. If your kid wants to work in SV, then pick Berkley.

If 100% certain that DC wil, stick with computer science, UMD is a better choice even at same cost. I get Silicon Valley, but there is a shop off Rte 198 that knows a thing or two about computers too.

If any chance the major could change, then Cal.

Umm... yea, but the majority of high tech jobs at the most "fun" and interesting, hip companies are in SV, especially for a recent college grad. If you are a young single person in high tech, you want to work for one any one of the companies in SV. The perks there for a single person is great. You will have tons of fun, and sorry, but MD weather cannot compete with CA weather. Skiing, surfing, sailing, desert down south, forest up north. If it weren't for the cost of living, it would be paradise.

Berkeley, hands down. However, UMD isn't too shabby.

Win-win.

If it was Stanford, Cal Tech, or Harvard/MIT/Princeton, it might be worth it. If you are in MD, it may be better to stay in-state, but do UMBC rather than UMD - that seems to be were all the energy is in STEM locally.

I'd kick ass at UMD then go to Cal for grad school.
