Private Math Tutor Recommendation for entering 1st grader. NW DC?

Anonymous
Hi,

Can anyone recommend a math tutor for student entering 1st in the Fall? We noticed this year that DC seems to be struggling a bit in Math. We aren't alarmed, but would love to supplement over the summer so he is better prepared for 1st grade. The idea would be for someone fun and great with kids. Don't even want DC to know he is practicing "Math." Any suggestions? Please, no snarky answers. . Thanks.

Call the school and ask.

Start paying cash for your groceries and let your child be in charge of it. He/She will learn how to count change and do all sorts of mental math.

Also, play Monopoly and Black Jack. Get some dice. Have fun with it.

Yahtzee or the prirate number box game is great for basic mental math

I am a special educator with a small private practice outside of school hours. I enjoy working with children your son's age, and using games and activities to make learning fun. I have current references that I'd be happy to share. You can reach me at washdctutoring@gmail.com.

Thank you!

I'm not being snarky, but seriously think you are worrying too much about this. Unless a kindergarten teacher has expressed real alarm to you ("Every child in the class can count to 100 and Johnny doesn't seem able to distinguish quantities at all!), there is really no reason whatsoever to be getting tutoring, however "fun." Childrens' cognitive development is uneven and varies from child to child. Nothing you have said suggests a problem; in fact, there is some evidence that pushing children to develop skills too soon can end up backfiring. If you're not alarmed, just do as the PPs have suggested and play some monopoly and let him count change. Otherwise, don't fret, and save the money you'd have spent on a tutor to do something fun with him....

My kid does Dreambox math online. You can get a free trial.

PP. OP here. Totally appreciate your feedback. Totally makes sense and your advice is right on. With that said, is it awful of me to ask for tutor that will do the things you suggest. Honest answer - I'm a working mom and fear without time and money commitment, I will simply never find the time to do the things you suggest. Barely have the energy to type this response. .

Could be a great job for a middle school math student and very fun for your kid.

So... don't worry about it! I too am a working mom. I don't do this stuff either. Your son will be FINE. Really. You're fretting too much.
