Steel windows & doors

Do you have steel windows and doors? If so, what advice would you give to someone thinking about a new build using them?

Any particular manufacturer you would suggest?

No advice, but I like them.

Have you priced them yet? They look great but cost a fortune.

First, the pics you posted are gorgeous. I absolutely love them. We are also doing a new build and have selected an iron door. These are all custom made. I'm assuming they do windows as well but honestly don't know. Try this website -

Good afternoon,

At Steel Windows and Doors USA, we receive these types of inquiries often and have done many projects identical to the ones pictured above. If you would like to send us a rough take off or sketch of the units you need, we will be happy to put together some budget pricing for you.

how do you handle thermal bridging ?
Anonymous
Note that steel has a thermal transfer rate much lower than that of aluminum as well as less surface area for the heat transfer to occur (note the ultra slim sitelines); therefore steel does not generally require an added thermal layer. When a thermal layer is specified, be sure that it does not compromise the structural integrity and strength of the steel by splitting it into 2 separate pieces with a thermal layer in between. You want to make sure that the steel remains solid. Check out this site for more information: http://www.hopeswindows.com/evolution/

Gorgeous, love them. But, not practical enough in DC. I like to be able to open the windows, and without a screen and bugs, you can't do that with these. Also, I know you can get them insulated, but I'd worry. If I was in California, I'd do in a heartbeat....if I had wads of cash lying around.

This. Steel is an excellent conductor for temperature and it will be bringing cold from outside. So, unless there is a sunroom or something else that will help isolate the steel from outside elements, it will be like having ice cubes in winter in your living room. Same for steel doors, ok, but you need to add another door on the inside or an entree on the outside of the steel door.

Those are mostly aluminum storefront.

I would assume for something like that it costs around $60/SF.

You can get operable steel windows and optional screens.
