Argh, shin splints

Anonymous
Trying to get back into running post-baby, but I'm only managing to do it sporadically. Still, I've felt fine physically when I've managed to do a few miles 2-3 times/week for a few weeks, even when I've restarted after not running for over a month. Took the jogging stroller out today and did 2 miles, after not having run in a month, and tonight my lower right shin is hurting when I walk up stairs. Frustrating!

So: how long do I need to wait before I can go for another run, and what should I be doing in the meantime to heal and make sure this doesn't happen again?

FWIW, I am a normal weight for my height (5'4.5, upper 130s), and I do have good, properly-fitted running shoes (Brooks).

Bunch up a towel with your toes while you are sitting down at a chair, and do toe taps.

RICE (rest, ice, compression, elevation) is always the go-to treatment for a running injury.

You need to distinguish if this is muscle pain or something else. This may help:

Thanks for the link PP. Based on that info, it doesn't seem like it's a stress fracture - there is no specifi point that is painful when I run my fingertips up my shin. It definitely hurts when I stand on my toes, though. Pain is front tending toward the inside, not outside. I'll do some of the exercises suggested in the link.

First PP, I'll try that too, thanks!

OP again. Oddly, I have no pain in my shin whatsoever today. Not when walking the stairs, not when standing on my toes, nothing. So maybe not shin splints? Think it might be ok to try another run later this week if the pain doesn't return?
