Visa Black - what gives?

Anonymous
So, we were just "invited" to receive a Visa Black card. My DH thinks it's great and is ready to jump. However, I saw that it has a $495 annual fee (+ $195/year for an extra card). Is it worth it? What is so special about this card? What am I missing?

Is it a status thing? Like AmEx black (think it's black?)?

Don't do it. It is just a copy of the Amex black card without a lot of the perks.

Annual fee for a card = waste of $$

I received an "invitation" too. I don't think it's very exclusive.

I got the offer also. In the trash. Perks aren't worth it.

I worked on developing Amex black. The visa black is a complete spin off, it's frankly a shitty version of Amex platinum. If you want to get something semi exclusive, the Amex platinum is much better. Anyone who knows their shit won't be fooled by a visa black card.

Amex is also using them over the use FYI.

When I saw the fee, I trashed it.

Thanks...I won't even open the invitation I got today.

I think everyone got an invite this week. Our household income is just shy of 100K, not sure how we "qualified" but yup, got my invite in the mail yesterday.

I got an invite for some Amex card with a $495 annual fee. It went straight into the recycling bin.

I make less than that (about $75k )and I got an invitation a year or two ago. I wonder how they're qualifying people for this thing.

Visa Black Card: It’s modeled after the American Express Centurion (aka “Black”) card, but this one, issued by Barclays, is more likely to put you in the red. It comes with a hefty $495 fee — and you don’t really get all that much for your money, according to CardHub, which labels it the worst general consumer credit card for rewards among the 1,000-plus it evaluated. Cardholders earn a measly one point per dollar spent, while many other rewards cards offer 2 points per dollar (and don’t charge you nearly $500 a year, either). And while we’ve seen many penalty interest rates that hover near the 30% mark, the Visa Black takes it over that threshold, with a default rate of 30.24%.

Yes, you get access to airport lounges along with some other perks, but there are plenty of cards that offer airport lounge access and similar benefits for less than $495. CardHub calls it a “cheap imitation” of the AmEx Black Card.
