Chelsea Clinton's Pregnancy - a political prop

When I heard about Chelsea Clinton's pregnancy on the news last night, I wondered to myself, "how long before someone claims it's just a campaign stunt?". Didn't take long:

As if a 34 year old married woman would have any other reason to start a family.....

I agree that it's silly to think Chelsea would make such a life-changing decision for its effect on the campaign. But nevertheless, it may affect the campaign and I wonder in which direction.

Are people more likely to move in her direction because of the adorable photos go her with the cuddly grandchild, or to feel that the idea of President Grandma is ludicrous. I know it sounds sexist, since we have had several presidents with grandchildren (Eisenhower and GHW Bush, for example), but realistically, what effect do you expect it to have?

I think being a grandma definitely ages Hillary. Absurd, but still.

Doubt it's a stunt, though I can't believe that she could talk with any hint of serious credibility about running for mayor of NY or Senate, as she did.

She has just about zero significant accomplishments in anything that would remotely qualify her for a significant public position. Yet there's that familial sense of entitlement that will keep me (a Dem-now-independent and strongly anti-Republican) from voting for her mother.

+1. This will do nothing to deflect the image/ reality that she looks and is over the hill.

From the campaign's perspective, I can totally see telling Chelsea and her husband to go ahead with a pregnancy. It can't hurt and might help.

Pictures of Hillary place her age wise in an appropriate zone. HRC gets lots of criticism for her looks. (Ie. she's not hot) No one expects a grandma to be hot, though.

Any pictures of HRC with a grandchild can only soften her image. She gets a lot of crap for being tough. A baby will soften her image.

It also speaks hugely to women's issues and family issues. Mrs. Palin trotted her kids out at every opportunity and it was visually very powerful. That campaign talked about Palin as a "hockey mom" a lot, because it appeals to voters. Grandma Hillary will have the same appeal.

From a mom's perspective, I can totally see Hillary telling Chelsea to go right ahead with a pregnancy, because time is wasting and I want to see my grandkids.

She's the former senator from New York and the former Secretary of State.

She is now more qualified than George W. Bush or Barack Obama when they were elected.

What the fuck do you want in a candidate?

I think PP was talking about Chelsea's possible political aspirations (she has hinted at this recently).

It sucks that Chelsea can't do anything normal without it being scrutinized from a political perspective.

She's a 34 year old married woman. They have been married for 3+ years now - it's just "that time", you know?

I'm pretty sure the Clintons would have been beaming grandparents if Chelsea had gotten pregnant immediately.

Do they ever.

Not everything is “choreographed” for political gain - even in the world of the Clintons. Chelsea and her husband were ready to start a family. That’s it. It shouldn’t have an impact on a possible campaign of Hillary’s - it is part of life for goodness sakes. If Chelsea’s pregnancy plays a role in any campaign, then the people of this nation have sunk pretty low - there are many more important things to consider.
