Hi, what is the permit process for having a fence installed in DC? We own the land we want to install it on and will keep it under regulation height. Thanks!
I didn't think you needed a permit for a fence. Is there an existing fence?
You go to the permit office - homeowners section or hire a permit runner to do the work for you. You tell/draw on the plat what you are doing and the height. Even replacements need permits. Anything over 2.5 or 3 feet (can't rmbr which) requires a permit.
The company we used request we get a permit and a copy of our land space. Neighbors do call when they see work being done and the copy of the land space is to ensure our fence isn't over our property line.
You can get post card permit on line if replaces existing. 7 feet is the limit in Dc unless you can get neighbor to sign for taller fence. If taller and both parties agree can be as tall as you like. Post card permit is printed on line and is35$
It also depends on which neighborhood you live in, particularly if the fence is visible from the street. In historic districts like Cleveland Park and Georgetown, you have to get HPRB staff approval. If the design is compatible, that's not such a big deal.
Also overheight fences need ANC support and public space approval usually.
