DS just turned 4 and loves to use scissors but will only shred paper with them. He can't seem to cut out a picture... I'm not sure if he doesn't understand how to do it or doesn't want to try but whenever we talk about "cutting out" something he ends up shredding it. This is probably a silly question but I have no idea at what age kids start to cut properly. Thanks.
Not yet! We are at 5.5 yrs and it is still a challenge. Practice using scissors (shredding) helps.
My son has gotten much better at it this school year (he turned 4 in October), as they do a lot of cutting at his preschool. He still can't follow the lines exactly, but he can get the general shape.
My son is 5 and a bit and he still can't. He has some trouble with fine motor skills, just like his dad and my MIL.
My DD (3.5) loves to cut paper but it is just for the joy of it, like your DS. Just this last week her preschool starting working with the kids to cut a straight line. So I would say that at 4 you could expect him to cut along a straight line that is drawn on the paper but not much beyond that and even that might not be perfect.
My son is 3.5 yrs old and he is just now starting to be able to follow a straight line. Try using a dark marker on a white piece of paper and have him follow that. Then you can move onto zigzag lines, etc.
