I'm not snobby or overly picky about this. Grocery store cake is fine. But all I've checked so far only have Disney and other characters (Safeway, Giant, Harris Teeter). I want something kid appropriate but without characters. Any leads? I don't have a Costco membership so that's out. Thanks!

I posted about this a few days ago. I HATED that all grocery store cakes were disney or other characters. I just had my DS's 3rd birthday and desperately wanted a firetruck cake. I ended up finding a tip about Esquire Confections on DCUM. Slightly more expensive than grocery store, but it was delicious, less expensive than cake specific bakeries and seriously it was so adorable. She's on facebook I believe.
You can definitely get a non-Disney/non-character cake at Wegmans.
That's too bad you do not have a Costco card b/c I was going to suggest them. I don't like stupid characters on my kid's cakes either, and I was able to pick a simple flower, grass, sun, cloud design at Costco that my 6yo DD was pleased with for her b'day last Fall. Do you think you could ask at the grocery store if they could just do something like this? Even bring in a picture of what you are talking about? IF it's not too complicated, maybe they would be ok with it?
Heidelberg or Amphora.
Second Esquite Confections. Expensive but good. Otherwise as the grocery store bakeries for what you want-- they may be able to make it for you.
You can custom order a cake at any grocery store. It's fresh and you can pick your own design.
Fluffy thoughts?
I have used Bake Sale a few times now and love her stuff! http://www.bakesaledc.com
Wegmans cake is so good. The best is the vanilla with the strawberry filling.
Can't beat the bang for the buck at Costco. Great cake at a great price!

Bakeshop in Clarendon.
Or Randolphs on Lee Highway. Heidelberg is always a good option. |
