My mom teaches online courses to home-schooled students. I don't know how much she makes doing it--I don't think it's a lot, but I believe she is paid by the class and she probably works close to 35 hours per week (including prep work). For her, it is definitely not a flexible nights/weekends thing--she starts early in the morning and goes through early afternoon, sometimes later.
She has really enjoyed it, though. Only major downside I think was tech issues, since she is not a tech person and doesn't have anyone at home who can help her out if there are problems (with audio, etc.). Also, she said that the group dynamics in an online setting can take some getting used to.
Honestly I don't have any idea how easy or difficult it is to get a job like this. In my mom's case, she was a teacher, then a homeschooling mom for many years, so the opportunity sort of fell into her lap.
