Very early miscarriage, or just really heavy/early period?

Anonymous
So this is pretty graphic/tmi, just a warning to help decide whether to read or not.

My "period" started pretty early this month (which never happens) and it was incredibly heavy with very serious cramps (neither of which ever happen). I didn't think too much of it, except that it was odd, until last night I started having very heavy bright red bleeding that could not be contained at all with tampons. Several clots of tissue passed during that time. This was day 2 of what I thought was my period. Overnight the bleeding lessened, and it is not so bad this morning, but I am still cramping. Also odd is that since the "period" began, I've had lots of gas, stomach pain, and diarrhea.

I know I shouldn't have consulted Dr. Google, but I did, and most of what I read makes me think this was a very early miscarriage, although maybe it could just be a really early/heavy/weird period. This morning everything seems ok, just like typically uncomfortable period symptoms, so I'm inclined to just let it ride and not worry about it, but I'm wondering if it's foolish not to get checked out by my ob-gyn.

Does anyone have experience or knowledge about this sort of thing?

I think it is a very early miscarriage. I had 2 of those and just didnt know until I had 2 real miscarriages. If you continue the heavy bleeding call your doctor or go to the er.

Thanks for the feedback. No more heavy bleeding, at the moment anyway, but just a nonstop dull cramping feeling that won't go away. I feel sort of shaken up about it all, but don't want to overreact.

Just curious if you've taken a test? My early miscarriage was like this but because we were TTC I had gotten a positive before my "period" arrived right on time. I wouldn't have known otherwise except that it was pretty brutal.

PP here - I also want to mention I continued to have positive first response tests for a few days after the "period" started so there's a chance if this is a miscarriage you could still catch and confirm it.

I haven't, but was thinking of picking one up. I wasn't sure if it would even show up on a test this early, or now after the fact? Also wasn't sure if I really want it confirmed, but I guess it would be good to know for sure what is going on. It is a little brutal, not actually like any period I've ever had. I wasn't TTC but am not on birth control, just using condoms.

Yes, you can most likely get a positive test if you were pregnant. I had a miscarriage at 5 wks, and it was not much more than a period, but I'm sure different experiences are normal.

That's really helpful to know, thanks. Maybe I will give a test a shot just to try to find out for sure what's going on.

NP here. The home pregnancy tests can test positive for a time after a miscarriage. (I had a miscarriage at roughly 6 to 8 weeks and still had a beta hCG hormone level of 400 two weeks after the m/c. That is more than enough hormone to test positive on a home test.)

OP here. Now I'm driving myself crazy trying to remember when my last period was. I don't keep close track, but usually it's towards the end of a month. I thought this was a really early period, but maybe I missed one at the end of last month and didn't notice, so I was actually late instead of this being early. I don't know, kind of driving myself crazy now. My husband really feels I should go to the dr, but it's a really inconvenient day (really week) for it.

The chances are that you won't need a doctor. I'd pick up a test just for peace of mind.

I'll do that. I'm actually wondering if it's negative if I should call the doctor - is it more concerning if it's not a miscarriage? This is just SO out of the norm for me as period symptoms.

Now I've had a ton of clear discharge, soaked right through the tampon not long after putting it in. So much weirdness.

Even though someone miscarries, they will still have a positive result on a home pregnancy test weeks after so the only way you will know for sure OP is to test yourself soon.

It depends on your age, OP. If you are in your 40's, it could be the beginning of the weird periods some of us get when perimenopause is starting. If you are younger, it could be from a fibroid. I wouldn't automatically assume that it was a miscarriage.
