I would get her a tutor. I hate math to this day and it started in the 3rd grade. I remember it well. I wish my parents had thought of a tutor. I had a hard time in college just thinking about taking a math class, ruined my GPA, I think it could be the teacher. It is very hard for a "math" person to get it across to someone that is not a "math' person.

Maybe the teaching methods being used are not the ones that work best for your child. I agree with the previous poster. A tutor can make all the difference.

Try teaching her to multiply using addition. For example 3 X 5 would be 3+3+3+3+3 = 15 or she could always draw 3 groups of 5. The other thing to remember is multiplication is memorization - try a multiplication CD. My son loves the Multiplication Hip Hop CD and he is five.

Also explain that division is sharing; for example if she had 12 candies and she wanted to share with a friend. 12 candies divided by 2 people. Have her draw two boxes and put one circle in each box to represent the candies until she gets to 12. The number of circles in each box represents the answer which is 6.

Hope this helpful; I taught third grade for several years and these are the strategies I used with my students.
