| Rare? Well? Medium? other? |
| Well but not burned though I'd take burned over pink. I can tolerate medium well if the pink is minimal. |

My DH does this too. I blame his upbringing where Ketchup was a vegetable. Makes for international travel an complete embarrassment. |
| Medium / medium well. My dad can't stand people who ask for their steak well done. He says it ruins a nice cut of meat. It's gauche (although he doesn't use that word). |
| Rare plus, which I learned from Michael minna. It's between rare and medium rare. |
| I am one of those non-foodies who asks for steaks well done -- and I still don't get why the rest of the world cares. So I don't want to see pink/blood on my meat -- why is that so unsophisticated? Yet every time I'm in a group, someone who isn't a close friend has to comment. |
| Rare. Grew up on a cattle farm. We don't eat chicken. |
It just shows your lack of refinement. That's OK. I would not comment, though. |
Don't take this as an attack on you. You may want to get something else next time. A well done steak really lack taste. Its like a burnt cookie. The longer you cook a steak, the hotter it gets, and as it heats up, the muscle fibers get firm and all the juices cook out. The result is that the interior of a well-done steak is a uniform gray color, and the steak itself is tough, chewy, flavorless and dry. If you order a steak people think you like steak. So people may think you are inexperienced and some may be insulted by your actions. Also, well done steak orders will sometimes get a lower quality meat or a steak that has sat in the warming tray all for a while....it's not like you will know the difference b/c it's over cooked. If you don't like the pink/ blood(its not blood) in your meat, you don't really like steaks and you should get something the Resturant can prepare properly. |
This exactly except for burgers that I eat outside. In that case Medium |

As rare as I can go without the meat actually being blue.
An acquaintance in Germany used to order Steak Tartare at the butcher's, raw freshly-ground beef, with tartare sauce. One day I will try that, but having taught microbiology, I have visions of endless enteric bacteria being washed down my throat... |
