Students Seize Dartmouth President's Office

Anonymous

Realize that this event transpired last week but is anyone still seriously consdiering attending such a school when the studnet seieze the President's office? Wait! Is this 1967 revisited? Wait! ....At least those protests revovled around legitmate social issues.

But folloiwng the lead of a professor claiming the school is "White Supremacy U"? Give us all break.

Not considering it only because my DC was denied. The school has a history of activist groups. There was even a brouhaha in the alumni association a few years ago. The groups can be anything from the Dartmouth Review (conservative) to this group. At least the students have passion, even if it is slightly misplaced at times.

At least he spoke with them and acknowledged their "demands." While I was in school, a group of students in one of the clubs I was a member of (but I was not one of this smaller group) tried to "occupy" the President's office until he "met their demands" (this was related to clean energy/trying to get the university to close the coal-fired power plant on campus) but he flat out refused to speak with them and had them escorted out by campus security.

This happened at my college (An SLAC) and my law school (HLS). It had no impact on me as a student and was a bit of a joke. That said, we are not going to get financial aid for college, and I would have a tough time sending 60k to a school that permits such silliness. It reflects poorly on their judgment to admit such students and to hire such faculty members. Fortunately my junior hasn't got any of the crazy schools on his list so far.

Meh. I'd discourage DCs from Dartmouth because of the frat scene. But a few protests? What is college for, if not for pursuing (even in naive or misguided ways) your passions?

It's democracy. Now other students can explain that it isn't "White Supremacy U" (or maybe it is, I wouldn't know). The first protesters apparently felt they weren't being heard, but now they will have to listen to other points of view. But the point is, don't try to shut down the entire debate.

+1 on the Frat scene..its totally nuts there...and the school just refuses to do anything about it...but that's before you even get to this silliness (i.e., occupying the president's office).

It looks like about a dozen kids protesting...meanwhile there are hundreds of students getting trashed in Hanover every weekend. In both cases, however, I wonder whether it's tied to the sheer isolation of the school and bored kids who have lost a sense of perspective.

Same thing happened at Dartmouth in late eighties when I was there. A sit-in in the Pres office.

Sadly not much has changed over the years. Which is partly why their applications were down 14% this year alone.

Although Dartmouth says it's still looking into the decline in applications, I think it's pretty safe to say it's less to do with once-a-decade sit-ins in the President's office, and much more to do with multiple bad articles about the frat scene there.

the decline is irrelevant as i really don't think the quality of student is affected and it is still brutally hard to get in.

i guess the data point where adcoms will be least happy with is that i believe the yield is the lowest in the ivies

Ditto. Also HLS, but maybe after you. My SLAC has gone insane too. Although I give money (as does DH to his SLAC), no way our kids are even interviewing there.

Let me get this straight. You guys are discouraging your kids from considering multiple schools that offer truly excellent educations, just because a handful of kids tried to protest something once or twice? SMH

I don't read the posts quite like that.

Seems like the issue with Dartmouth goes way behind a group of idiots taking possession of the President's office....this school (whcih just incurred a significant drop in applications and they've appointed a committed to figure out "why") has other problems...namely the hazings and incredible drunken student behavior all very well docuemnted...so need to fight it out here on this board.....no one discounts that there may be good instructors but the one that allegedly brought all this on......shoudl be fired....of coruse one can't do that since its "free speech" and all of that....

As well he should have! You don't reward this kind of behavior.

Yep. Know why? Because I would not want a professor teaching my kids this kind of idiocy. White Supremacy U? What an ass!
