Gardeners: what flowers to replace fern bushes?

Anonymous
Over the weekend, I removed 5 large fern bushes (I think it might have technically been zebra grass) from the mulch bed that lines the walkway to the front door of the house. Any suggestions as to what flowers I should put in? I was thinking something that expands a lot like impatients or marigolds since the fern bushes took up so much space, but not sure how they survive in the summer. The front of the house gets the summer sun at about 2pm. DH thinks maybe azela bushes would be ok, but they only look nice during spring bloom and then look plain and boring the rest of the year.

Any recommendations?

If you get a lot of sun try an herb border of lavender, rosemary, Russian sage. Make sure the lavender is hardy such as Spanish so it will winter over. Looks a little bleak in dead of winter but gorgeous 9 months

Any recs. for flowers? Trying to add some color to the landscaping (there are enough green bush-type plants).
