Just found I'm pregnant and considering going to Dr. Mareen Chua, does any one have any experience with her or delivering at Washington Hospital Center? |
I have a friend who recently (one year ago) went to her practice and was delivered by her. I am expecting as well and wanted to see Dr. Chua. I as told, today, that she is out on extended leave. My friend did, however, like the other women in her practice. |
I was with the Chua Whitaker practice for years (like 10!) and they are fabulous. The office staff and nurses are great and all the docs in the practice and wonderful. I switched recently because I am pregnant and WHC is way too far from where I live and work. Highly inconvenient logistically.
Dr. Ellen Whitaker, who'd been my OBGYN for a long time, stopped doing OB but the other docs in the practice are just as great. Before switching for logistical issues, I saw Dr. Bowen twice and she was wonderful. Dr. Chua has been on leave for awhile. I think she is back in the Philippines taking care of ailing parents. I highly recommend the practice. I would've stayed with them if they were affiliated with GUH or GWU, but WHC is just too far for me, especially in this weather---I'm due in 3 weeks! |
I'm a Dad - so, I can only give you somewhat of a third party perspective.
My wife is very happy with that practice and like Dr. Melancon the best. She also like Dr. Bowen. They were also very helpful when I was running around trying to get a prescription for my wife and I needed to talk to a doctor. We also had a good experience at WHC. It was also reassuring that Children's is next door in case something went wrong. |
I have had experience with Dr Chua!.
Dr. Chua delivered me, and then she delivered my daughter........she has been a gyn for about 30 years. Dr. Chua has retired! She was the best gyn I have ever known. If Dr. Chua knew something was wrong with you she didnt care if it was 10pm, she would still call you and let you know. Dr. Chua was caring, understanding, and she always put you first as her patient. She was compasionate about her work, and she cared about her patients. The gyn's in her office now.....will never replace her! |
It is true. Unfortunately doctor Chua retired in the Spring of 2008. She did not recovered well from a knee surgery and after months of medical leave she decided to retire. I was her patient for 6 years and she retired before my daughter was born in April 2008 I was very, very sad that she was not going to be my ob/gyn and deliver my baby. The other doctors in her practice were fine but she was superb. Can't complaint though. I am also seeing other doctors now because WHC is too far. and I don't work in the city anymore. |
I also had a good experience with them. My only complaint during my first pregnancy was sometimes it was difficult to get test results back. That being said I recently returned to the practice (had a miscarrage) and they were wonderful about getting in touch with me about the multiple blood tests that I had. |
I also LOVED all of them!!! We switched with second child because we moved into MoCo. I am with a VERY large and well respected practice now that came with a million rec's and wow very efficient but not nearly the emotional and personal connection. |
Dr. Chua delivered my two sons, the first in 1979 and the second in 1982. Although she was recommended by a close friend, when I called for the initial appointment I was told her practice was not accepting new patients. We met, by accident or rather as faith would have it, in the emergency room at WHC. She was the only OB-GYN on duty at 2AM. She asked me to come see her the following week, I did, and the rest is history. She is the first doctor I have truly loved. She was generous, kind, compassionate, and extremely intelligent with wisdom beyond the boundaries of medicine. I had very difficult pregnancies and she was there for me the entire time. Even when I moved to the west coast and after 15 years as her patient, I would fly back for annual exams. There was a gap of 8 years or so when I did not see her. The last time I saw her was about 5 years ago. Wow! She not only remembered me, my medical history, and my two sons but, she asked about my oldest daughter by name. She is the best doctor I have ever known; I will miss her more than words can say. |

Dr. Chua delivered my daughter in 1977 and my twins in 1970. I was a high risk during my pregnancies. I had high blood pressure, was very overweight (still is) and developed toximia. She eventually admited me to the hospital in my 7th month. I remember crying every time she stopped by to see how I was doing. There were a few days she did not come by, but she told me she was delivering babies. Not only was Dr. Chua very carring to me, she would sit down and talk to my family while they visited me. Everyone loved her. I had two cesarians, she told me she would give me a bikini cut so when I wore my bikini, no one would see my scar. I did not get the tradition cut down the middle of your stomach. She delivered my sister's daughter 12 years ago, and when she walked into the birthing room, she smiled and called my name. She remembered me after 34 years. She was the best. LP from DC |
I saw Dr. Whitaker between 2000 - 2006 and liked her - Dr. Chua was not taking new patients at the time. However, I ended up going to another practice because the office was a complete zoo. I'd routinely wait for over 45 minutes for my appointment no matter how early in the day, lab results were lost twice, and at one point they couldn't find my file. The front office staff wasn't very helpful either and it took forever to get an appointment. Dr. Whitaker was excellent, but I had to put up with a lot to actually see her and in the end it was too much. Perhaps things have improved since I left, but be warned.

I delivered at WHC, but not with any of the docs mentioned. I thought the hospital was good - no complaints. I was impressed by some of the L&D nurses.
I had a midwife (who is now at GWU), and when there was some fetal distress at the end, the baby was pulled out via forceps by Dr. Mitchell. I think everyone did a good job in managing what was a difficult delivery. We're having baby #2 at GWU, but only because our midwife moved there. Otherwise, we'd be fine to use WHC again. |
I've heard that WHC doesn't have a dedicated 24/7 anesthesiologist on call for epidurals. Can anyone confirm or deny? I'm planning on Sibley, but WHC is closer to my house, so I'd love to switch if I knew pain management would be reliably available.
(And no, I absolutely won't consider a natural birth. You pro-pain mommies can judge me all you want, just don't waste space doing it here!!) |
I can't speak for the status of anesthesiologists at WHC now, but when I had my daughter there two years ago, a nurse anesthetist gave my (originally unplanned) epidural at around midnight. I decided I wanted the epidural and literally within minutes the nurse anesthetist was wheeling in her stuff to do it. |
