Apparently, DCPS didn't think it was important to give Van Ness Elementary School a boundary in their first release of the updated school boundaries. To me this makes absolutely no sense. Why did they choose to do this?

VanNess is closed that's why.
And with the redrawing process ongoing plus uncertainty about where kids truly need to come from, just doesn't make sense to draw something and then undo it. |
| Look at note when you scroll over Amidon. It notes Amidon's boundary will be redrawn due to Van Ness. |
It would make sense to at least include a proposed boundary for Van Ness, since it will open for the 2015 - 2016 school year, the year when these proposed boundary changes would take effect. |
| The controlled choice cluster for Van Ness includes Amidon and a possible Ward 8 Charter school. How is it reasonable to travel from the navy yard to an unknown charter school in ward 8? Why the choice set isn't Amidon, Van Ness, Tyler and Brent I don't understand, that would at least make more geographical sense. This whole controlled choice proposal is crazy. It seems like Van Ness parents will need to fight harder to make it an actual neighborhood school of right. |
| Not having a boundary suggests that it could open as a citywide school. |
| Yep. I'd be concerned. Seems clear they are considering making it citywide as they did with the other schools that opened recently. |
| The conclusion that VN will be a citywide school does not seem clear at all to me, particularly in light of the decision to include SWS in the LT-Miner-JO Wilson choice set. At minimum, I would think that a citywide draw would be listed as an "option." |
| Why in the world would DCPS make Van Ness Elementary School a citywide school? What benefit does that have for anybody? |

The unknown charter school under consideration is Eagle Academy on Wheeler Road according to this app
http://ourdcschools.org/ which pulled data from the spreadsheet released by DME. The charter? schools are identified by school code in hidden column C. I'm guessing that the charters? in question are not yet on board with the plan, but DME did identify specific schools for inclusion. As for why Eagle Academy, my only guess is there once was a larger location in the blue castle and maybe there still is a smaller one closer to the stadium. I'm not familiar with specifics. |
| 1017 New Jersey Ave SE |
| Eagle Academy's remaining Navy Yard campus is small and just PS3-1st or 2nd grade, I think. |
| Amidon and Brent in the same choice set? What a joke! And they aren't even close to being in the same area. |
I think it's located in that building right at the 295 exit in Anacostia you take when going to the ballpark. Super tempting. Not. |
This process is so amateurish that I would not be surprised if the intern (or geographic algoritym) who reflexively matched the choice sets was aware that SWS and CHM were citywide schools. |
