When to drop from 2 naps to 1?

When did you all drop your DC's nap from two to one? And how did you tell they were ready? Our daughter usually goes down around 830pm but lately has not fallen asleep until after 10pm.

Thanks for any help...

Our DD was about 11 mo. old.

She used to take a nap at around 10am. But for about 3 days straight she didn't show any sleepy cues until about 1130 instead. She was learning to walk/stand/ate more solids, etc. so we sorta anticipated that these physical changes would probably alter her sleep schedule (hopefully for the better).

So, when she did eventually show signs of tiredness, we took advantage of it and laid her down. She ends up sleeping from 1130ish to about 230ish. So, it's one long(er) nap instead of 2 short(er) ones.
...still has this same nap schedule and DD is now 19 mo.

My first son was about 14 months when he dropped his first nap. DS #2 is 17 months and still will take an a.m. nap about 2-3 days a week, depending on what time he wakes up.

Every kid is different; just follow their cues. I've always been able to tell when they were tired, and just go with it.

My 9 month old has "declined" to take her afternoon nap the last 3 days in a row. I have left her up there for 1.5-2 hours and she doesn't sleep. Doesn't cry either...just talks to her self, pulls up on the rail, etc.

She has learned a lot of new things lately (crawling, pulling up, more table foods) and I was expecting some disruption, but not this!

She was never a long napper before, but she always went to sleep easily. Now even her morning nap takes her 30-45 minutes to fall asleep. I've thought of putting her down later for her morning nap, since she's not that tired when I put her down, and seeing if she'll take one longer nap instead of two, but everything I read says she needs 2 naps!

The weirdest part is the last three days, when I've gotten her up from her "non-nap" she wasn't even cranky and made it to her regular bedtime with ease!

So far she still goes down fine at bedtime and sleeps her normal 12-13 hours.

Is it possible that she's ready for 1 nap at 9 MONTHS?? I've never heard of this, but I don't know what else to do? I'm not opposed to cry it out, but she doesn't cry!

Any suggestions?

OP here - our daughter is 11 months old as well. I may try to see how just 1 nap goes for a few days...

About 14 mos. She started pushing the a.m. nap longer and then it got too late for a second. And, she would be crabby in the evening. So, we would fill up her morning and push that morning nap start a time a little later until we got to 1:00. She took to it easily and sleeps 2-3 hours usually (now almost 20 mos.)

My son also dropped it at 14 months. It was a gradual thing, but now we're pretty consistent. He usually takes his one nap from 1-3.

My almost 11 month old has not been wanting her afternoon nap. I read in the Ferber book that some kids transition to 1 nap sooner than 1 year, and he says if your 11 month old is showing signs of wanting 1 nap instead of 2, then go for it. I'm going to try 1 nap tomorrow to see how it goes.

At 18 months and then ONLY because he started daycare and they would only allow him one nap in the afternoon.

It isnt that she is showing signs of not wanting the nap...it is that she won't fall asleep until 10pm that has me worried.

DS went to one nap at 17 months; DD not until 20 months.

About 15 months...but that was mainly at his daycare's urging. I think it was too early for him. The days I had him at home, he would still sleep 1.5 hours in the morning and 1. hours in the afternoon. After that he was home three days a week with me, and we did the 11-1 nap for awhile (he was a totally cranky by 7:30), and now at 21 months he usually does 1-3 and it works well for him.

So...would a longer morning nap and a shorter afternoon nap indicate readiness?
