But but but... north Arlington! But I spent so much money! How is it my kids will have to be in a crowded school? With poor kids?!?

Enjoy south Arlington.

South Arlington is feeling pretty smug right about now.

That was our approach for our oldest, and it worked fine because there were enough seats. But if there isn't enough classroom space at enough sites to keep school size reasonable (I'd say 750 for ES, 1300 for MS, and 3000 for HS), that's unacceptable.

And it's not a high bar to clear; it just takes setting priorities and planning.

I don't care if you can't buy every kid a device (just buy them for high school kids who can't afford their own), I don't care if we don't have FLES (as long as high school foreign language is strong), I don't care if you don't play for every kid's AP and IB exam (again, just do it for the kids who can't afford it).

I agree with a lot of that. This school system seems to place a high emphasis on gimmicks. Arlington has to watch it or it will become a case study in how a good school system goes down the tubes and becomes a laughingstock.

1000+

This is complete and utter bullshit. Arlington needs to stop with any extras. Every student should be able to go to scool in an adequate space with four walls and windows. We shouldn't be wasting money on some stupid devices in elementary school. Pc laptops should be loaned to those who can't afford it.

We do NOT need award winning european architects to design hb. We don't need extra slides. How about we juse try educating everyone in English. FLES while nice should not be the priority over just providing basic facilities. It feels like a reverse hunger games with less than 800 students going to hb and the rest of the students are SOL. Is this really the outcome we want?

Overcrowding for more than 10000 hs students but spare less than 600 or so hs students?!

Holy crap. Arlington residents bemoaning APS ought to take a gander a few threads down at the shitshow that Fairfax has become: http://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/638609.page

Somehow the procedures for allowing people to sign up to speak at public meetings don't seem quite as vexing as having no idea how APS will deal with overcrowding but being 100% certain that it's going to leave many people very unhappy.

Wut? I was talking about how the county is going to have to cut teacher pensions, increase class sizes even more, and do who knows what else to get out of the unexpected debt problem they have accumulated.

Dp- Yeah. That's some big numbers over there. Still doesn't have the same urgent zing of, " online learning and shift schedules for all!"

To be fair, the Schooll Board also is not talkingabout shift schedules and significantly increased online learning. That was the Superintendent, a year ago, and the potential for that was pretty effectively brought down by that petition.

I saw the tragic thread about suicides at multiple Fairfax high schools, most recently Woodson. Our friend used to be a guidance counselor in Fairfax and said it is really hard to provide one-on-one attention in those mega-schools. Another reason for me that 4,000 W-L is just a bad idea.

Hmm... nicest, newest high school. Biggest campus. No surprises heading our way. Neighbors that aren't looking to screw you over... it's just a better situation.

Not just school system!! How a safe, wealthy county goes down the tubes as the number of AFH units keeps increasing exponentially. Bunch of dumbshits. Other counties are trying hard to purge this!
