Therapeutic Listening, any reviews? Did it work? Worth the money?

Anonymous
We have been recommended to look at therapeutic Listening, it seems a little pricey.

What was the experience everyone else got out of it

Would you mind sharing your child's special need, age, time on the program and results?

TIA!!

You mean Integrated Listening System? (http://www.integratedlistening.com/)

Not worth it for us, but some therapists will rent head phones and do it as part of therapy.

They still offer this? We did it years ago, total waste of time and money.

We tried it. My kid hated it (outside of therapy). Total total waste.

We were told to do it, and about to spend the money, but a friend who had bought the $1K worth of recordings and equipment, said it was a total waste of time for her kid, so we didn't do it.

FWIW, it seemed like every single practitioner we took DC to recommended the therapy they happened to use and sell! What an interesting coincidence! Most of those therapies were extremely expensive and not covered by insurance!

Buyer beware, OP!

My DC did have a a nice langauge boost after we did this.

I do know two people who love it and felt like it made permanent changes to their children.

I agree its a LOT of money, but as far as therapies go, having tried pretty much everything that is out there, this is not on my list of wasted therapies...

I have seen many positive benefits from ILS. Definitely not a waste of money for my child.

Total waist of money and TIME for us. We did it repeatedly with no results.

We did it. While it helped, it increased anxiety a ton!

We did it with DS (who has SPD) and it helped a ton. We did the vitalsounds program. After about 6-8 weeks, significantly cut down on DS's spinning behaviors (spinning hands, fixating on fans, spending hours on the tire swing) by I'd say about 2/3. Also completely cured DS of his phobia of strange/mechanical noises - we were able to take him to a barber who used clippers without any tears, distress, etc, and to Home Depot (where they have loud anti-theft klaxon noises at the door).

We did vitalsounds and later The Listening Program. TLP was expensive and through a private OT, helped some, but not sure that much for the cost. It just sounds like nice classical music. I do not believe it "rewired" his brain.

Vital sounds did not cost much, it was through an insurance covered OT. But it did nothing, and was a waste of time.

We have used vita links for over a year. I love it. One major change we noticed in my daughter is that she isn't hyper anymore. She was my vestibular/prop kid who normally climbs the walls...within the scope of the year, we sa a big improvement. She is so much more calmer!! In fact, instead of the ADHD I would say it's ADD now (she has Aspergers). We used this in school but also purchases the CDs to use when doing homework, etc. I love it!

There are several types of listening therapies out there, so when someone reviews their experience, it is important to state which one you are reviewing. They are rather expensive, for good reason............and that's why many clinics will try to work with parents on a rental basis. Before you commit, research on the net, with the understanding that there are many therapies out there and find out what kind of training your therapist has had. I know from experience it can be extremely effective........done properly.
