I am sick to my stomach. We are away on vacation until Monday at noon. I planned the last week of school open as the contingency plans say. My daughter has perfect attendance that is going to be blown because the county did NOT do as they said they would on their calendar. Make up the school days at the END.
And they wonder why kids are failing exams and our scores are dropping year after year. MCPS never takes education seriously and went back on its word. |
I am going to write to the board of education to ask why they have a published plan for make-up days that wasn't followed. Does that mean this was a bad plan? If so, what will they do for future years to create and approve a better plan, so that families and staff won't have to deal with unexpected changes to the calendar if this happens again.

Its okay, it is one day, the schools are going to be 1/2 empty. |
In all fairness to those families who planned vacations in good faith, never being warned that Easter Monday might be on the table, there really should not be any attendance penalties on that day. |
I predict this i the begiing of the end of Josh Starr |
A bit dramatic don't you think. It is one day and other school districts have done it for years. Relax. |
Kids are failing exams and our scores are dropping year after year (which, actually, they're not) because of this? Really? I think that school on Easter Monday, plus one more day at the end, and four days waived, is a dandy solution, and I'm glad to be able to move on now. |
he is asleep at the wheel on so many levels |
Is having a perfect attendance record that important that you feel sick? You made plans in good faith, I am sure your daughter can ask for work to do while on your trip. It's not your fault and I am sure it will all work out ok. |
Tell that to my 5th grader who has perfect attendance. We take school seriously in our house. We did what the county asked and left the week open for snow day make-ups. But I guess the families that blew it off, signed up for camps and vacations and then complained got what they wanted. Less school to have to deal with. It is really sad that more people are excited school is ending early than upset that the plan in place was pulled out and changed because...?? |
Have you seen the scores the last few years? Fail fail and fail. But of course they don't count for your grade so kids get A's on their report card. |
Are you referring to msa scores that no longer reflect the curriculum being taught? |
Actually, people are more excited that there aren't going to be six extra days of wasted time tacked onto the end of the year, than worried about your fifth-grader who has perfect attendance. Which is not to say that you and your fifth-grader shouldn't be upset. But I don't think that MCPS and the State of Maryland should make their decisions based on their effect on a fifth-grader with perfect attendance (to date) and vacation plans on Easter Monday. Life is uncertain. Plans change. That's a good lesson for everybody to learn. |
Have you seen the AP pass rates? Some of the highest in the nation. |
