MCPS Calendar '14 - '15

Anonymous
I was just reviewing the calendar for next year and see that they have a professional day tentatively sheduled for Friday 10/
31, and then are closed again on Tues 11/4 for Election Day. As a working parent these sorts of choppy on and off school arrangements drive me bonkers for work coverage. Anyone else on board for moving that professional day to Monday 11/3?

If so, write to MCPS with your comment before the calendar is finalized.

That's a good idea. I wonder if there is some reason they don't want to have school on Halloween.

it is the end of thw quater and the teachers do the reports that day. it is the same as last friday when they didn't have school. It is built into the bargaining agreement.

What I wonder is why the schools are closed for Election Day. Do all of the school districts in Maryland do this? There are definitely school districts in the US that do not close on Election Day.

The schools are used as polls.

Will the Union protest moving the workday to Monday? Seems like a fair swap to me. I'll write an email.

Yes, I know. I should have clarified: There are definitely school districts in the US that do not close on Election Day even though their schools are polling places.

I'd rather have the 2 days together but that will delay getting report cards verified by the principal and printed.

A couple of years ago, they did have the holiday on Monday and then Election Day on Tuesday. I think this was Nov. 2010. Maybe 2012, too. Who knows.

How would a change of literally 1 school day impact report cards?

I'm always relieved when we don't have school on Halloween. The younger kids bring candy and are hopped up on sugar. The older ones have inappropriate costumes (slutty witch, drug dealer).

I don't get this. When there's no school on Halloween, the school doesn't cancel its Halloween party -- the school has its Halloween party on a different day.

If there's no school on October 31, Halloween parties (or "fall festivals" for the no-fun schools) will be on October 30.
