Financial Aid for Divorced or Legally Separated Parents

Anonymous
A legally separated friend of a rising high school junior is starting the quest researching college financial aid. I would assume that a parent in her position (claims DC on taxes) might be eligible for more financial aid since they are legally separated. Though I doubt if they weren't legally separated (just separated), the standard married criteria would apply for financial aid.

Anyone been in this situation that I might pass on some educated advice?

OP,

They're still going to be separated, not divorced, in two years? Google this. There's information online.

If they divorce, they should not remarry. The new spouse's income will be used in the FA calculation. (This is not the case with child support, should they have younger children.)

^^Unbelievable that a new spouse's income could impact financial aid!

They get you coming and going AND then you get taxed on room and board. Eye roll!

Yep. But not child support. Totally screws the child!
