Anyone familiar with the Trinidad neighborhood ?

Anonymous
Hello,
I am about to move from out of state to DC. The home we are moving to is located in the Trinidad area(near Galludet University) Can anyone give any feedback (pos or neg) about living there and things to do with kids ? Thanks !

It's a highly transitional neighborhood, and some areas are nicer than others. You should really come here and see it before you make any decisions about buying in this neighborhood.

I would be wary, and I say that as someone who lives on the Hill and is very sensitive to people making "the crime in that neighborhood is horrible" comments. But Trinidad is still, as PP said, highly transitional. It's one of the neighborhoods where police set up "checkpoints" this summer to combat crime. I would come check it out in person. I'm sure there are nice/safe areas, but you do want to be very careful.

Please come visit the neighborhood to see what it's like during the day and at night before you move in.

have you looked up trinidad in the washington post?

i vaguely remember something about the most crime in dc happening within a very small area... namely the trinidad neighborhood.

They had checkpoints in the Trinidad neighborhood this past summer to try to cut back on crime:

Is it even transitioning? or is it just crime ridden....

Um, I'm not going to be as polite as some other posters, if you are seriously looking for input. There is a lot of crime in the Trinidad area. If you are not used to living in a highly inner city neighborhood, you will not be happy there.

Every block is different, of course, but you really need to see it (and google it) to get a realistic picture.

I know I will get flamed for saying this, but I would not live there with children. I am a suburban wuss, though. I have friends who live in a different area of DC but not that far away (near Atlas Theater), and they moved after a year because of the crime. Their neighbors were wonderful, but there were drive by shootings and gunfire much more often than they were comfortable with.

Apologies to those with a different experience, that's just my opinion.

Most neighborhoods that were referred to as "transitioning" stopped transitioning for the better a couple of years ago when the bottom fell out of the housing market. Neighborhoods like Trinidad were improving circa 2005 when they were the only place anyone could afford a home with the crazy rising prices. Not so anymore, and many places like this are going to get worse as unemployment rises.

I had a friend who bought a rowhouse there dirt cheap and fixed it up (this was a while ago, though). There were bulletholes in the glass and you couldn't get a pizza delivered there.

I've looked at places to rent there (for other people -single twenty-somethings) in the past year and it seemed OK but that was on a Sunday afternoon. With any neighborhood you should drive through at 11:00 at night to check it out.

I wouldn't live there with children. If you go by reputation, it's the worst neighborhood in Northwest. There are other neighborhoods that are just as affordable but not as crazy.

I live and work in transitional neighborhoods. I'm pretty city-wise. I don't mind walking around in "inner city" neighborhoods. That said, I wouldn't live in Trinidad. Just not worth the daily stress.

OP, you should check out the particular block it is on and as one pp said, go by both in the day and in the night. Trinidad did have a high number of murders this summer but I've also been there during the day and really liked the one street I visited. Your experience could be very different depending on the block.

Like here in Capitol Hill, if you bought a house where a bunch of people hung out on the corner you might feel very scared. Or if you bought on a street where lots of people know each other and watch out for each other, you could end up loving it. I have heard gunfire from time to time in my neighborhood and there have been some murders over drug turf but I live on that street where people watch out for each other and I love it.

It also has to do, as one pp noted, with what kind of person you are. If you're used to inner city living, you might be okay. If you're not, it could be a big adjustment.

But still, I would go see the particular block and make a decision.

me too. I live in a neighborhood that a lot of moms on here wouldn't set foot it, and I love it, but I don't think I would buy a home in Trinidad. It has great housing stock, and as another PP said, your individual neighbors would probably be very nice. But for some reason, that area has a lot of transient crime, likely related to drug trade.

Trinidad w/ kids--not even an option, even for short-term. Random gun shots at night, groups of people hanging out on corners, lots of drugs. I lived on Capitol Hill kinda near there. When I moved out, there was police tape wrapped around the gate in front of our townhouse. Someone had got shot in the ass the night before--true story.

Second everything that PP have said---especially part about visiting and seeing it during both day and night before deciding to live there.

Why Trinidad? Is it because of proximity to Gallaudet?
Some less crime-ridden alternatives which are reasonably close to Gallaudet would be Bloomingdale (north of Florida Ave), LeDroit Park, the north side of Capitol Hill, Shaw. A little bit farther out---but same pricing--are Petworth and Brightwood to the northwest of Gallaudet and Brookland to the northeast.

I'm not a suburban wuss, I've lived in the inner city most of my life. There's no way in hell I would move to the Trinidad area --Especially not with children. Not interesed in dodging bullets on a daily basis. OP switch to plan b.
