To the Indian/ south Asian moms out there, what do you serve when you have non Indians over who want to eat an Indian meal. Both lunch and dinner ideas welcome.

Tried and tested recipes include:
Biryani/pulao with raita
Palak paneer/mattar paneer/paneer tikka masala
Dahi vada
Chicken kebabs
Chicken tikka masala
Chole/rajam
Dal makhani/tadka dal
Potato sabji and poori

Dessert is sometimes kheer/ricotta rasmalai but usually fruit and ice cream.
I will buy naans, samosas and chutneys.
When my parents visit, friends get treated to idli, vada-sambar and masala dosa.

Baigan bharta. Butternut squash korma. Malai chingri. Shami kebabs. Dals. Bengali green bean posto. Generally I just tone the chilis down or leave them out.

Avoid Indian desserts - most Americans find them too sweet.

Appetizer: some sort of pakora goes down well

Entree: Kebab, biriyani, palak, chole, raita

Everybody loves butter chicken. Saag paneer is popular. Personally I like mutter gobi. Paapri chaat is a hit in addition to the usual samosas and pakoras. If you have someone to keep cranking them out hot and fresh, paranthas are a treat.

Please pardon my spelling; I'm not Indian. I'm the American son-in-law.

And I agree about Americans not liking Indian sweets. But kheer and kulfi are good. Kids like gulab jamen (sp?).

OP here. These menus are wonderful - they make my mouth water. Thanks. Any good recipes you use? For biryani, do you use the spice paste/mix at the indian store.

The best vegetable biryani I have made is from the Ko Rasoi food blog. It is somewhat labor-intensive, but absolutely worth it.

Another blog I go to for recipes, especially makhani-sauce based ones is Ecurry:

My best friend growing up was Indian and I was a picky eater. Her mom always had lots of different kinds of freshly made Indian bread for me and some less spicy curried chicken.
