Do you drink while on an antidepressant?

Anonymous
If yes, does it impact the effectiveness of the antidepressant?
Anonymous
Yes I did drink and no it did not impact the effectiveness.

You'll black out a lot faster and it definitely reduces the effectiveness. But people still do it.

No, I did not mix Xanax or Lexapro with alcohol when I had prescriptions. Too afraid of going out like Marilyn Monroe.

I would ask your doctor. It also may depend on how much you drink.

I've been drinking occasionally while on Cymbalta for years, never had any problems with it.

I drink very occasionally on Wellbutrin. I can absolutely tell a difference from when I'm not on an antidepressant, though. I will REALLY feel just one glass, which I find disconcerting, so I drink very little while on the meds.

My MIL does and I can tell you she has no idea, but it makes her act horrible. It changes her mood, judgement and actually makes the depression worse. she won't give up the alcohol though. I am aftraid one day she won't wake up. Don't mix stuff.

Yes. Celexa. No issues.

Huh? Can someone clue me in about this? I had no idea you weren't supposed to mix A-D's and alcohol, I do it all the time. I thought Monroe overdosed on barbiturates?

It's on the bottle.

Type of antidepressant matters. My friend blacks out way too easily on cymbalta. Drinking while on a MAOI can be lethal, which is probably why they're rarely prescribed. It raises the risk of seizure on wellbutrin.

Be careful. Not recommended for very good reason.

0830 here - I would not drink while on Xanax. But Xanax isn't an antidepressant. People are confusing types of drugs.

This. The majority of people on antidepressants these days are on SSRIs -- Wellbutrin, Zoloft, etc. I have been on a few different SSRIs and I never changed my habits of being a social drinker -- I have 1-2 drinks a couple of times a month, and a couple of times a year I might have 3 drinks over the course of an evening. I never had a problem with the SSRIs.

I did a few times. I'd usually end up throwing up or blacking out. For obvious reasons, I stopped drinking while taking an antidepressant.
