We want to get 3-4 Leland cypress (sp?) as screen trees for privacy. Went to Merrifield and the trees were pretty reasonable but they charge 65% of the cost of the tree to plant them? we are not green thumbs so we can't do it ourselves. is this pretty standard or should we be looking elsewhere?
Most garden centers charge a similar fee. If you buy the trees and do not have them planted by the company, they sometimes give only a limited warranty
I used Merrifield for planting and they were idiots. They have one or two really great guys walking around thier plants and trees that know a ton, but the ones that come to your house to plant know next to nothing.

If not Merrifield, any other nova reccs ?

Don't go to Merrifield. We had them plants tens of thousands of dollars worth of their trees, one was dying, and they claimed it had something to do with something not connected to them. Which is odd, since they sold us the trees and they planted the trees themselves.
They could have comped one tree out of so many, but they chose not to, so we tell our friends not to go there, especially for the money. There are tons of smaller nurseries (less overhead!) on route 50/29, toward Fairfax, I would try them. |

What do you mean by mature? We have had landscapers ask about buying certain trees/shrubs on our property.
Mega thousands in labor and equipment usage for the buyer. Huge excavation around them. We always purchase from meadows farms in great falls. I got 8 ft lelands from them and they did the planting. If you only need 3-4 for a privacy screen please be aware of the tree's spread. Also deer eat them and they are not as hardy as a blue spruce but grow much faster. If you have a tight lot consider something with a more narrow profile than a leland. |
Try Betty's Azalea Ranch.
I had a guy from a landscaping company plant a bunch of stuff, including trees, for me. It was called Nottingham Gardens.
We've had good luck with Merrifield - even when one of our bushes started dying. They investigated and did replace it.
Meadows Farms seems good too, but we haven't made any major purchases from them yet to give a personal rec.
Meadows Farms has a better warrantee than Merrifield. I browse at Merrifield then buy through Meadows Farms.
Also, don't go for Leyland Cyprus. While they grow tall relatively quickly and are good for screens, they have shallow root systems, and aren't the most stable when they're full grown. Learned that the hard way when several trees planted by the previous owners of our home fell over in a snow storm. When we looked into replacements both the arborist we had check out our remaining trees, and the landscaper we used said to choose something else. Of course I can't remember what the tree we chose is called.

In a snow storm, it would not be unusual for people accustomed to snow to clear off their trees, so the weight of the precipitation does not break the trees.

I was also going to recommend Meadows Farms.
