College Discussion

Is it my imagination or has college discussion been going off the rails lately. Is the current thread 'No Acceptance, What Do I Do Now' legitimate or just a game that we got pulled into trying to help?

Three of DCUM's most difficult posters have all suddenly become posters in the college forum. Two of them even managed to get in to a tit-for-tat with each other. That will probably never end. However, while I can't be sure, I think the "No Acceptance" poster is legit. That thread is the classic case of "troll spotters" ruining a thread. I always advocate that posters who believe there is a troll either ignore it or report it to me. Crying wolf is worse than being a troll in many cases.

Fair enough. While I still think it's not legit, I'll look the other way from now on.

Are these new entrants to the College forum some of the posters from the Political and Religion forums? I avoid the Political forum because I don't want to get sucked up with the wingnuts there, and I've promised myself to cut back on my visits to the Religion forum. The College forum used to be one of the more helpful forums here -- please say it isn't so.

Sadly, yes.

I'm sure this has been answered before: But does your admin panel tell you which IP addresses are being used to post, and can you easily compile a list of all the posts that have come from a particular IP address?

Asking for a friend.

Yes, I can see the IP addresses of posts. Yes, I can get a list of all posts from that IP address. But, this is not as useful as you think. In the days of iPhones, Starbucks wifi, work and home Internet connections, etc., a single user can uses a half-dozen IP addresses that change frequently. The biggest troublemakers give themselves away simply by the content of their messages.

Thanks, Jeff - I appreciate the peek behind the curtain.

Would you ever consider doing, like, a DCUM AMA? I'd love to know stuff, like, which neighborhoods - to the best of your knowledge - most of DCUM's traffic comes from, and that sort of thing. If you have any sense how much lying and how much truth-telling's going on in those "where I live and how much I earn" threads based on what you see in your analytics. If you've had any insights about DC, or life, or anything, in your time running this board. That sort of thing.

I guess I could also just ask here, since you're responding...But I don't want to bother you, just because I am procrastinating with my own work by spending way too much time here.

I don't really want to do an AMA, but I try to respond to direct questions. I don't want to respond to all of your questions above in this thread, but if you start a new one -- website feedback is probably the best forum for it -- I'll respond there as long as time allows it.
