Indian pickles

I recently discovered a love for Indian pickles ("achar" on some menus). Thinking of dropping by Patel Brothers in Rockville to buy some; I assume they must come pre-made in jars. Can anyone recommend a good brand?

Patak's is good. Priya's is also good. The best mango achar (aam) I've found is Pravin's. It's only available in NJ though. What are you looking for - sweet, sour, hot?

I don't know if you can get it here, but last time I was in the UK I bought a tomato, garlic and chili chutni from a new brand called "The Spice Tailor", and it was quite the best I have ever had. They also do a lime chili pickle which I am sure is good too.

The store bought pickles are not great, if you have had homemade. That said, I would stay away from Priya and Ruchi pickles. Too much hot chili, and you don't taste much else.
Patak's is more of the British Indian style. Deep, Sanjeev Kapoor, Bedekar and Mother's recipe are OK.
All these pickles add vinegar to help with preservation. We don't do this at home, which is my main grouse with store-bought. If you are OK with this, all these brands are quite good.
