Help: Inaugural Ball gown advice?

Anonymous
I just found out I'm going to one of the balls. Here's my gown problem: I have a big bust and fat upper arms. I usually try to avoid ALL sleeveless and cap sleeves. But I don't want to buy one of those mother-of-the-bride type ensembles with the long-sleeved tops either. I can definitely buy some sort of wrap to put over my shoulders, but I've done that before and I think it's uncomfortable to hang onto it all night.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm 5' 8" and probably a size 8 dress. All my weight's on top.

I'm not obsessing over this or anything, but I figure if I'm going to spend money on a gown, at least I want to feel good about myself.

I hate wraps, too, but I think it's your best option.

I'm betting your upper arms aren't that big.

Ballgown skirt and crisp white shirt or fitted cashmere sweater? J Crew does a ballgown skirt.

lots of cleavage and nobody will even notice your arms

Or wear strapless or spaghetti straps with a shrug or over the elbow length gloves

Strapless is your best look - or a portrait neckline with 3/4 sleeves.

If you are a size 8, then your "fat" arms are only in your head. With which I sympathize because I have a similar preoccupation. But arms come in different shapes - not all arms are made to be the sculpted looking stick-like ones that we tend to see on models or Angelina Jolie.

OP here. Thank you! I think I can find something like this - maybe with a fitted V-neck sweater. And I love the J Crew jewelry lately.

Thanks again!

I second the PP who said if you are a size 8 and 5'8", you are not fat. My advice: start doing push-ups and tricep dips and arm curls daily between now and the ball--not a ton of time, but you will see some tone and feel better. Then bring a wrap or shrug, or go the JCrew option and instead of the white shirt, how about a short sleeve (not sleeveless) cashmere sweater (beaded or plain).

Plus, in my experience from having been to an Inaugural ball, you're going to want to be warm (read the recent Wash Post article about going to the balls) so a wrap of something rather than hauling a coat is the way to go.

Have fun.

I have found that STRAPLESS is the best way to go for arms. Anything else, even covering them with sleeves can actually make them look bigger. Seriously. If you have a beautiful line on the dress and show off some boobage, no one will even NOTICE your arms, and, I agree that no one is looking at your arms and they are not fat!

Try on some strapless and bring someone along who will be HONEST! I can come!

Does it have to be a gown? When I went to one of the Clinton balls, I went for more of a tux look -- I wore a dressy black St. John knit jacket over matching black knit pants and black heels, with a sparkly piece of material inside the front of the jacket, and a bunch of antique rhinestone pins on the front of one shoulder and big antique rhinestone earrings. So much more fun and funky than a gown, for me anyway! And so flattering. A funkier look probably works better for a DC ball than a society ball full of southern belles, but it's a thought...

And as a person who has been to 3 balls and is headed there again...don't spend a ton of money on an outfit. It is a sea of people and you don't want anything that you will care if someone bumps into you and spills. I got an awesome dress at Banana Republic for $60 and I don't care if someone ruins it!

Have fun

Why not make a dress according to your own measurements? In that way, the dress will be perfectly fit for you!
You can go to edressit, www.edressit.com .
You know, i also have a DD cup, then my friend suggest me to go to edressit.
I have done four dresses now, and i am quite satisfied with all my four dresses!

Good Luck!

No, no, no! Strapless dresses and chubby arms do not go together!! Just take a look at bunch of wedding announcement photos and you'll see what I mean.
