| Our neighbors dog is out at 5:30 AM barking his head off every morning. We have tried talking with them but they are pretty unreasonable about the dog. Don't want to get into a huge fight with them, but do not want to listen to the dog either (have not called animal control yet) WWYD? (Sorry if this is a repost) |

I doubt that animal control will do anything, if the dog is up.
You could make a noise complaint to the police. They might write a ticket, but probably not. |

Call animal control! They will contact them. |

there is a specific code regarding animal noise. They may not allow their dog to bark and disturb your quiet enjoyment. It is a $100 fine. Montgomery County Police, Animal Services Division via the police non-emergency number, 301.279.8000 Here is the number to call. |
| That is WAY too early for a dog to be up and barking!!! I would call on them. |
|
It also depends on how long the dog is barking. If the dog is barking for 5 minutes then usually they will not do anything. If it is going on for 30 minutes a citation will be issued. Just let them know what time it occurs and that way they can have someone there to catch the violation. |
How do you know OP is in Montgomery County? In any case, how would it hurt to call animal control to find out what is/is not appropriate? |
Don't count on it. Several years ago our backyard neighbors went away for the month of July and left their 2 dogs outside in a tented temporary fenced-in pen. No doghouse or cool area. The dogs were given fresh water and food each day by a neighborhood teenager. The dogs stayed up barking every night until about 2 a.m. Hours of barking. And wow, when there were summer thunderstorms they went nuts! We called both of the above. MC Police came during the day. Neighbors obviously not home. Not sure if they left a note or fine or if anything ever happened. $100 surely would have been low in my mind. Animal control came. Since the dogs had shelter, food and drink, nothing happened there either. This went on for 4 weeks. I'm sure I could not have a teen-aged rock band play in our garage for 4 weeks or blast the stereo until the wee hours, but apparently 2 barking dogs is just fine. The family finally returned and sold their house within a year. Thank goodness. |

We've got neighbors with a barking dog, too. It goes on until 11pm and starts up again at 5:30. The dog just howls endlessly. There are posted "beware of dog" signs on their fence, so I suppose the family is aware their dog is a charmer. And by neighbors, I mean across a busy street and two houses up. People just moved in next door to them and have a newborn. I have no idea how anyone sleeps. We use white noise machines.
Granted, I'm not a dog person, but I don't understand people who are seemingly unable to realize their pet is a nuisance. |
| We are in the same boat. Our next door neighbors leave their spastic dog in their yard for hours at a time and even after midnight. It does nothing but bark continually and can't stop once it starts. The wife seems to get it a little but tries to laugh it off, while the husband is passive aggressive about it. He pretends he doesn't notice while giving you furtive glances. We've had a small break since their fence has been down due to construction but it will be going back up soon enough. In addition to planning on calling Moco animal control and the police when necessary, I am looking into barking deterrent devices that can be aimed into their yard. They are harmless and perfectly legal devices that emit a high pitch when it senses the dog barking. Reportedly they stop barking after 2-3 weeks. We'll see. |
Will the County keep it anonymous? |
| Same boat here in DC. I called the police but as the neighbor wasn't home, there was nothing they could do. Didn't even leave a note. The stupid dogs don't bark when neighbors are home, of course. |
| If you have an HOA I would check to see what they may do for you first. |
You can, but it really does no good. People tend to know full well who complains. |
| A pet owner had to get his dog de barked to avoid the fees. After neighbors complained over and over again. This was in chevy chase |
