DCs private sucks. Praying for good lottery results

Ok, sucks is a bit strong but not worth the money AT ALL. Not at all impressed. Really, unless you can afford it 100% and still save for retirement, etc i think public/charter is the way to go.

which school?

I've been trying to tell DH this for the longest. Praying that we get into our first or second pick.

Thank you for speaking for all independent schools on the basis of your experience. I find this so valuable.

Catholic schools. Reasonable tuition. Good value.

^^not a good value in comparison to a good public or charter.

Catholics don't have the kids at the bottom of the class in public, which pushes up their average scores/level of rigor. However, they also have large class sizes, and some use outdated curriculum and techniques. The big regret that my Catholic school grad friends have is the lack of rigor and critical thinking in their classes.

Yes, why be coy? Everyone knows that there are good and bad private schools, just as there are good and bad public schools. A lot of people are trying to figure out which is which. Spill.

If you can't afford private school, you can't afford it.

The privates here are excellent-they are just way too expensive, and most Catholics are difficult to get into unless you are a diocese member. For girls, catholic school options narrow significantly for HS-I am not sure if it's supply or demand, or both, but it is an issue here.

Most Catholic schools (grade school not independent high schools) fall at the absolute bottom of the school heap, under publics and privates. They tend to have terrible teacher-student ratios. The instruction is sub par and there is religious dogma coloring the academics. The facilities are poor and old. Just a bad choice all around.

The dc charters don't measure up to Montgomery or fairfax county

depends on which one you pick. My child had a very good experience and ended up with a much more classical humanities based education, rich in history, literature, art and music, than what was offered at DCPS.

Which would be great if such fields offered jobs that enabled one to earn enough to pay rent in a major Eastern city.

Our charter is a much better fit for us than the schools in either of these districts.
