A thought on Burris

Why doesn't Reid seat Burris after declaring victory by saying that it was probably his threat not to seat Blago's choice that forced Blago to appoint someone who had not "paid to play"?

Good idea. It would be an improvement over the current circus.

OP - I was just discussing this same thing with my husband last night. Don't those people understand that Blago did this on purpose? Of course, I do believe that he initially put the seat up for sale. But after his arrest, he decided to say screw you in a different way. He intentionally picked someone who was well-respected (and African American didn't hurt, either) to have the last word.

I hope that they do seat Burris and so we can move past this embarrassing spectacle.

It looks like they are moving in that direction. Reid is now blaming the Illinois Secretary of State for not putting his seal on Burris' credentials and the Illinois Secretary of State is blaming Reid because the seal is merely ceremonial. Both of these guys have done 180s (as has the front page of DailyKos).

Reid really should step down. He's been suckered by the Republicans for years and now he got punked by Blago.

I agree about Reid. I also agree Burris should probably be seated. But, I also think that Blago is a jerk. And, that Burris is a shameless opportunist. Oh well. We'll see what happens with that seat in 2010. THat's when he'd have to run, right?

I agree he's an opportunist. He's besmirched his good name by accepting the appointment from Blago. And he has a colossal ego. Look at this:

He's ought to have turned down the appointment so as to avoid the messy situation he's in now. He's lost the last three times he's run for office in Illinois. I doubt he'll be elected, so this is his only chance to be a u.s. senator.

Well, you just never know. Some people do have greatness trust upon them. Burris may turn out to be a well good Senator, we may suprise us all.

Burris seems to have gotten himself into hot water.

Sounds like he was less than forthcoming. Whether it's perjury or not, it doesn't look good for him.

Should he resign?

Yeah, what's the deal with this never-ending soap opera? Is Burris just sleazy like Blago or do his 71-year-old brain cells not work very well? You just don't happen to not mention that Blago's brother asked you to raise money for him.

Yes, he should resign. Now he has acknowledged "he sought to raise campaign funds for then-Gov. Rod Blagojevich at the request of the governor’s brother at the same time he was making a pitch to be appointed to the Senate seat previously held by President Barack Obama." Full story here:

Yuck. Burris has ruined his own reputation, and for what?

Wow, and after he marched on the Senate like he was an honest many being unfairly denied his right to serve!

What is up with this guy? He looks either like a crook or a dithering idiot by now.

Or both

Tuning in late to this, but just saw a news report ( a link on Drudge) where Burris now says he did raise or try to raise money for Blago. The ever-expanding story (from Burris) doesn't look good, no matter what the ultimate truth (ie. even if he is "clean"). It seems to me that this shouldn't have been a tough question for him if he was above board though--ie. full disclosure from the start, none of this "you didn't ask the right question" nonsense or late disclosures about fundraising. The bad perception is there now and he's got to go. For a politician, he should know that perception is more than half the battle and he is losing this one.
