testing embryos for disorders

| My cousin just found out that her child has a very rare chromosomal disorder (and will not live for very long). Both she and her husband are carriers of the recessive gene. If they were to try IVF for future pregnancies, would they be able to screen the embryos for the 1/4 chance of having the disorder? I have no idea how the science (and ethics) works out on something like this. |

| Yes, you can go through some version of IVF and have the embryos tested before transfer (PGD) or you can get pregnant naturally and test in utero (amnio or CVS). |

| Yes. It's pretty common that people who are both carriers go the IVF route and select the embryo without the disorder. |

Most known genetic issues can be prevented through IVF with PGD on the embryos. We opted for this using NCIVF to bank 3 embryos then tested them and transferred the one normal one back. Currently 14 wks pregnant with a healthy baby

So sorry to hear about your cousin's child.
As others have said, PGD can be used to screen embryos for genetic disorders. We had healthy DD with IVF-PGD. Unfortunately it's not usually covered by insurance. |
