When running, what are you thinking about?

Anonymous
I have been running the past 4 years, but only short distances. 15-25 minutes at a time.

I wish I had better thoughts going through my head. This is what I think about:
1. I check my watch every couple minutes. (maybe this is too much?)
2. I feel short of breath and wish I enjoyed it more. (i wish it was more effortless)
3. I cough periodically.
4. I sometimes count 1-6 or 1-10 again and again, especially if the path is divided like most sidewalks. (seems silly)
5. I listen to music most of the time. Sometimes I focus on the song, but even when I dont, music seems to help.
6. I think about other things like work or dinner or what I'm gonna do next. (wish i did this more, but I'm too busy with steps 1-5)

I think about:
1) how much I hate running
2) how stupid do I look running
3) am I running to fast or too slow?
4) see #1
5) I hope that car doesn't jump the curb and hit me
6) Man...these frickin' shin splints!

sex and never run with music.

Sex mostly. When I'm not thinking about sex I'm listening to my breathing. Very rarely I'll think "my boobs are moving too much - does Title Nine have a code?"

I think about how much my balls hurt flapping around. Ouch

As a guy, thinking about sex may lead to an erection. That is uncomfortable and very awkward if the whole world can see it. For that reason, I AVOID thinking about sex.

1. Music
2. Upcoming races and if I was to run the race at the pace I am currently running, what would my final time be
3. How long/which direction I want to run. Usually I start out with a plan for distance/route, but sometimes along the way I'll change my mind--either I feel tired and decide to cut it short, or I'm feeling better than I thought and decide to extend...sometimes traffic will cause me to stop for a while and instead I decide to go a different direction so I don't have to wait, etc.
4. Fantasize about winning (or at least placing in my age division) my next race--TOTAL fantasy, will never happen!
5. Fantasize (in general!)

I listen to the BBC Worldservice, podcasts and iTunes U courses. If interesting then I don't notice the time.

Mile 1- I hate this, why do I do this, this sucks, I am turning around

Mile2- ok first mile is over, I'll go just a little longer

Mile 3- start shaking off work yuck, looking around, etc.

Mile 4-5 this feels great, suck it work, the sun is shining, wine tonight?, etc.

Ha! This is me too! I also start to focus on the music and just getting lost in the moment for long runs.

I listen to music and clear my head, or I listen to podcasts and enjoy the 45 uninterrupted minutes of listening to This American Life, Snap Judgement, Risk, etc. I think about a work problem that I'm trying to work out -- or a family problem that I'm trying to work out -- or sometimes - just zone out and think of nothing at all.

Ugh is this almost over
Counting my steps per breaths (2 in then 2 out)
Rocking out / nearly prancercize to favorite tunes
