how is the autism class for kindergarden in mc md ? my son will be in kindergarden next year ,the pep team pushes me toward the school/community base program but I just want to know about the autism program in mc ,if any parent out there has experience.my son is non verbal and on the spectrum.he is potty trained know his alphabet and number follows simple step direction,has no behavioral problem currently use pecs for communication . do autism classes use aba therapy ? if any parent with non verbal kids on the spectrum benefit from autism class please share your info.i just want to get ideas from parents before I visit the school.

| You will hear rumors about the Lourie school being an autism school but it isn't. They will take kids on the spectrum but not if it's the primary diagnosis. They're also limited to the number of kids they can accept and take those who are emotionally and behaviorally disabled. |

Yes the K. Classes in the MoCo autism program use ABA and the teacher student ratio is very low. If you have a child who learns well with ABA it is a good data based program.
School community based programs have a higher ratio, do not do ABA unless it is on the IEP, and may have kids that have mobility issues and need positioning assistance etc. The SCB classrooms do not have the kind of autism programming support that the autism program has. The SCB classes do not have the behavioral expertise that the autism program has. PEP staff are being pushed to refer kids with intellectual/developmental disability to SCB regardless of their needs. At least that is what a staffer who recently quit says. So insist on a visit to the autism program to see it for yourself. |
