Summer Job or Volunteer Opportunity for 14 yo?

Anonymous
I tried to search through the forum for past posts but just came across a lot of negativity. Does anyone have a suggestion for a job or volunteer opportunity that he could do week by week? We are in and out of town all summer so there are only specific weeks he can do something. I have tried to interest him in going to camps but he feels he is too old. We live in Bethesda. Any suggestions?

Check with your Parks and Rec. In Arlington younger teens can apply to be assistant camp counselors at the county day camps.

If he attends a MCPS school, they often need students to volunteer in the office over summer break. My DS answered phones in the counseling office at his high school last year, and received SSL hours for his time.

If he does look for a job, have him walk in with a calendar with dates clearly marked when he's sure he can work for the entire summer. Employers like predictability even if they aren't happy that the teen can't work every day/week all summer. DD worked at one of the pizza delivery places (work permit) answering the phones, taking orders. She was too young to cook (by law) or use a knife.

You really are asking a lot... think about places where he can actually, really, benefit those who he would be working for. The list is small if he's in and out all summer.

Montgomery County Department of Recreation needs Counselors in Training

City of Rockville Department of Recreation, same thing.

They are both accepting applications now.
